Hello
I am planning to retire imminently and would like to go cruising in Brittany in our boat probably for about 3 or 4 months . I'd like to take our Cali over on the ferry so that we have her there for forays inland . Consequently I'll need to leave the van in different marina car parks for upto a week at a time when I return on the train to collect her . Does anyone know any insurance that I will be able to do this with ? I've spoken to Caravan Club . They said no . Thanks for your help .

Comfort don't either.
We have a friend who travels on a yacht/boat and he leaves his locked in the boatyards of different marinas, is this not an option?

Might be worth insuring the vehicle with a French insurer for the period abroad - try http://www.insurance.fr/car-insurance-english-expats-france

You will probably have to suspend or cancel your UK insurance for the period to free up the no claims bonus. Having said that i am not sue the French have a bonus system like ours. You can probably buy 6 months French cover and cancel it when you return to the UK - you might get a bit of premium back. Cheers

I think the problem is leaving it unattended for extended periods as CC allow you 270 days / yr European Travel. I don't remember seeing anything in their T&C's about leaving the vehicle in a secure car park abroad. The problem is the Insurers have been asked the question. Also a Marina Car Park is probably not secure.

You are correct WG - once you ask the question you are snookered. If you give the insurers the chance to say errr no you have a note on your file. If i had 270 days abroad, i would tend to take the chance and argue the point later - if i needed to claim. See if the Marina people will keep an eye on it / leave your contact details / take a few precautions / make sure nothing worth breaking in for is visible etc

I think you're best bet would be to go to an Insurance Broker as I believe you will need specialist insurance.

Thanks for your amazing prompt advice guys .Was hoping for a miracle cure I suppose . My first post . Great van . I did have a Westfalia 1700 auto M reg in 1976 in my student days . Reliving those days .

Trebor - you're living the dream - a Cali and a yacht :) . You're way ahead of me. The Cali's on order but the boat is going to have to wait a while yet. Enjoy your retirement and have a great trip.
