Warranty cover extended cover

Hello VM.

I'm just catching up with this subject, as my dealer has recently told me our van (Aug 2021 std. California with ca. 36,400 miles covered) needs a DSG oil change, and wants £370 for the pleasure !

I realise your post is almost a year old, but £215.79 still looks like a steal even accounting for likely VW hyper-inflation - could you tell me where and with whom did you had the work done please ?

Many thanks; JS.
You need to add VAT to that £215 !

You’ve another 3399 miles to go yet.
I timed mine so it was changed at 39991 miles (it’s due at 40,000) :)

OK, thanks, I didn't realise that, but even if it were ('only') £258 I might reluctantly bite their hand off compared with the £370 cost I was given this afternoon !

Does your dealer price match ? Mine did not so I went to an Independent who has the ability to update the digital service record

Yes, fair point, and thanks - I shall time it to be done just before the 40k so long as any planned trips permit that !

These folks love trying to frighten you into premature action don't they ? - my Mazda dealer asked me a couple of years ago if I'd like a set of 70% worn brake pads changed . . . I suggested that I'd wait 'til 90 or 95% before changing them (myself) ! The service lady thought me very daring !

I'm not sure, I only began the painful exercise a short while ago !

Suggest a search "DSG Service" not all DSG services are the same !

Some require an oil filter , some do not , some units are sealed for life and do not require an oil service. Find a trusted garage to advise based on your Vin number .
DYOR

Edit DSG oil service is not simply draining the oil and replacing, I posted the costs of oil, filter, Labour etc some year back.

Yup, thanks, I read everything I could find here on the subject, and saw what various folk said about filters etc., and of course it's no substitute for getting quotes based on pin-point accurate information for your own specific vehicle. Nor is it at all easy to determine price comparison across the years.

Just called my Lookers dealer again and instead got their Newcastle call centre, who said cost for my VIN is £352.36 inc. VAT (no filter change) and 'at the manager's discretion' they may price-match . . . that's tomorrow's job then !

Just some info

I did a DSG oil change, plus filter, myself and genuine VW oil is costly circa £20/Ltr cheap source and it takes 5.5ltrs.

Did you use VCDS ? If not what method did you follow

Yes, that does seem a massive increase. The work was done by Lookers VW van centre in Carlisle.Maybe they include a filter change which doesn’t look as if they did for mine.

My quote is also from Lookers, and is, more accurately, £352.36 inc. VAT (no filter change specified apparently).

Just had the MOT check done at Hull van centre; free as we have the additional 2 years service plan. Van is now at 72K mls, and I had a conversation with the service desk about doing the DSG oil change, I was told some gearboxes need a filter replacement some don’t. I was also told that the oil change is slightly more complex in that the filling process involves running the box and then checking! The Technician emphasised that the oil change is absolutely necessary and not to be delayed! Makes sense, as the replacement / repair of the DSG must be large.

Just to add that Hull van centre appear to be making a real effort as they washed it as well even though it was only in for an MOT.

Carista showed required transmission Temp for setting oil level correctly.
Did a run before change to get temp up. then after filling did another run to get temp back up before doing a final oil level check.

Filter was hardest to change due to its location.

You Tube videos show what tools are needed and how to do it giving info on how to before starting the job. Basically measure what comes out and put the same quantity back in.

Thanks. I'll let my mileage get rather closer to the 40,000 scheduled service point before shopping around for quotes.
