What is this rubber strip for

We bought 2 roof securing straps from the club shop as ours were missing,I watched the video on how to fit them but we’ve got this rubber strip in the way all along the sliding door side.In the horrible event we had to use them I presume we would have to take this out.What is it’s purpose,is it where the awning fits?We bought the van like it when it was only 18 months old,has someone removed the awning? or do vans come with it on.If you have an awning how do you fit the roof straps on the awning side.We don’t need an awning fortunately as we never use campsites.

You should be able to put it back on either side of the van if you want it later.
