Why aren’t current offers available to orders placed mid 2022?

Interested to find out from anyone has recently taking delivery of a new Ocean and was offered the new VW promotion (3 Services, MOT and 1y free Insurance. We are still waiting (7m now) but told we could not take the benefit of this offer as our order was placed before the promotion.

In fact we have just spec changed from 4M to 2wd 204ps and made a colour change from our original choice of grey/silver to all dark grey to speed things up. Not sure if that will help!

Keen to know if anyone managed to get the latest insurance offer on a 2022 order though.

Can you cancel and reorder? I ordered 2 weeks ago and have a build slot of week 8 with the mentioned offers, although looking at the other thread you wouldn’t be able to get a 204, I guess it depends what discount you originally got?

Offers only valid at point of ordering I’m afraid. Order changes mid flow are the same base order so makes no difference.

Cancel, then tell them you will reorder elsewhere….. They‘ll either let you walk (I doubt it….) or give you the offer.
I’d say the dealer would be ecstatic. They get to keep the deposit and likely be able to sell the Cali when it arrives for more than the previous discount.

Maybe that would’ve been the case in February 2022, but there are many orders being cancelled this year. Deposit should be fully-refundable, that’s been the case as far as I’ve experienced anyway. You’d definitely need to be prepared to “walk” tho, dealers will sniff out a bluffer (that’s their job to read people.) There are significant discounts being offered at the moment, even above the ones mentioned above. That’s my experience anyway, but maybe it will be different in other locales.

They used to let you choose between the deal available when the van was ordered & the deal available at delivery, I don't recall anyone getting any deal that was available in the middle of that period.
If you are financing via VW the interest rates when you ordered would be far better than todays.

If the order books are currently shut for 204s a canceled order for one available this summer wouldn't hang about so the dealer will be happy to let you walk away.

Where does the data for “many orders being cancelled” and “significant discounts” come from?

Deposit being refunded if you walk away is dealer discretion - if you change your mind or cancel they don’t have to repay you, as per the t’s and c’s.

My deposit was fully refundable

Your deposit being fully refunded is, unfortunately, not the same as deposit is fully refundable.

Ok 2020 was a different time, but the dealer said I could cancel at any time and receive a full refund. Knowing of course he’d then have a Cali coming that he could sell at list (I received a c.10% discount)

Well, this was from my 2021 contact, but as you say, different times. It's always at the dealer discretion though and as per the contract (this is the VW one and written well before 21) they could even ask you to stump up money for their time, which I have never seen.

If the deposit was fully refundable, what would be the point of the deposit ?

They are not really but many dealers will just refund the deposit as no harm no foul in most cases, especially if they can move the stock on quickly anyway.

Can’t comment on the cancelled orders but the discounts are published on DTD

Had a look the other day - they look the same as the discount I got when ordering in July 21 - 9%, which does not look like "significant discounts" to me, looks like more of less the same discount from DTD as always. Given the margin on these dealer side is 12% (margins differ per vehicle with popular ones getting the dealer a smaller margin) there is not a lot for a dealer to play with unless it is a quarterly sales bonus they are chasing.

Compared to this time last year it might be considered “significant”

DTD discount is currently 10.5% on an Ocean. Looks like they need sales.
Certainly better, I guess as @andyinluton says, relatively it's actually still more expensive to buy a Cali than back in 21. Certainly what we have is about 7K more expensive now than we paid. Even with an extra 1.5% discount that does not negate the price increases.

Back to the OP's point. No - don't hand your order back, or even threaten to, for the sake of 1K worth of offers.

Correct, when I purchased a new T6 Beach in 2017 it was £44,000 after a 15% discount. I’ve a new quote today for a T6.1 Beach and it’s £58,650 after a 15% discount….. I’ve added some extras to the T6.1 quote, LEDs etc but the difference is still significant.

However, it’s a much better quote than lasts years and the lead time is significantly less.

Due to lack of supply and any sort of “deal” on a Cali, I purchased a T6.1 Kombi in January 2021 as it did have an 18% discount and the lead-time was at least palatable (although I had to forgo DSG to make it so.)

Some say, “buy the dip” but I’m not convinced enough yet to pull the trigger on my new quote.

Discounts have gone up by about 1.5% list price has gone up by far more than that. So compared to last year they are even more expensive.
I guess my point was, I was under the impression that you couldn’t really get any discounts in 2022

Oops posted to soon…. So if the OP didn’t get a discount the maths might stack up on a higher list price but bigger discount plus the “freebies” if he cancels and reorders

Has a VW dealer offered you 15%? If so, I’d take it.

My understanding is that VW margins have been reduced and will be getting less.

The dtd discount now includes the 1k finance deposit contribution which makes the o/a discount over 10.5%. This deposit contribution is basically offsetting slightly the increased interest rate.
