Having had a window panel shattered, it took me ages to find a place that could source and replace it. Instead of the pane, I was told it had to be the whole unit replacement. We got a couple of quotes, tho I wasn't overly confident they were genuine as they kept coming back with questions despite sending photos, model details etc. anyway, it's a 1995 so I realised it might not be too easy.
We took our van to a VW specialist in Croydon - they quoted a price, for removal and replacement. When I went to collect they said they had removed the window which had proved trickier than expected, they'd subcontracted a firm to replace the unit and blah blah blah, bit more expensive than quoted. I could have argued, but with kids in tow, sunny afternoon, super hot office, and prospect of long drive back thru rush hour, I paid up and left.
Couple of days later, inspecting work I detail, there is left over sticky material on side of van (I assume they stick panel in Place before fixing), but what has made me furious is that they cut out the old window panel - literally cutting through the inside panelling so the window is no longer sealed inside the van. What were they thinking? I didn't notice until I was outside the van with the sliding window open - you can see how they hacked away at the panel, and it's open so things can just slot things in / or liquid seep in) between window unit and panelling. We've called and I'm going back today again. VW admitted they removed window prior to subcontracted window company refitting new unit, so I know it's VW that's liable. What I can't figure out is how they are now supposed to fix this problem. They've cut the panelling all the way around the window, so would I expect them to replace all the panels? I think it's 3 separate panels - I can't imagine it's possible to purchase and refit panels without major work on the van, I wonder if there are sealants they can fit?
Either way, they've messed up my van, it'll be worth less on re-sale, and I'm livid. I can reclaim the money as I paid on card, but it's more the further damage they've done to the van that I'm worried about. What are your thoughts on this? Should I post some pics?
