Control panel blank when ignition is off

My control panel goes blank when the ignition is off and when on hook up-it only works with the engine running. With engine on all other functions (heater, roof, fridge) are fine but with engine off panel will not display. No idea if battery is charging from mains as it won't display on hook up, charge OK from generator. Leisure batteries both read 12.5V. Any suggestions?

PS Display date and time need resetting when it comes on.

Looks like one of the supply fuses has possibly blown, from a quick look at the wiring diagrams check fuses SC34, 54 & 55 (fuse panel C behind the drink bottle cooler). Also check Fuse SH21 (under passenger seat)

...<thinks to self> one day we will find time to identify all the fuses :)

You have switched it ON using the Left Lower Button?

Could you also update your Vehicle Information, in your Profile, or at least give us a clue as to which vehicle and year you are referring to.:thumb

This is on an 08 California-fuses are behind a panel under the drinks compartment. I checked all the 25 & 30 amp fuses all OK-not sure about one under seat.

PS there is power to the mains socket on the sink unit

Checked all fuses I could get at, one had gone under the seat (15A) but replacing it made no difference to display. Couldn't reach some under seat without removing battery, will check at we.

Checked all fuses (apart from the 15A under the seat-replaced no effect on display) all are fine. Any other suggestions. Thanks

Have you done a Control Panel Reset and accessed the hidden menu to see if there are any registered Diagnostic codes?

Try the following first.
1. Switch Off the Control Panel using the L lower button. Wait 30 secs and Switch On using L lower button.

2. Press And hold R lower button and press Control Knob. A hidden menu will be shown Scroll to Volkswagon Diagnostic. Any Fault codes shown. Write down codes then scroll to Reset and clear codes.

Tried that no fault code shown and still no display without engine running, next step? Tnakks Alan

Thanks I'll take a detailed look to see if I can spot the source of the fault.

Have tried looking at the circuit diagram and checking all connectors including the one under the sink. Also charged all batteries still no change. Anyone got any other suggestions before I book my van into the dealers? thanks A

With no ideas from you guys I approached my local van dealer. They admitted little experience with Californias and suggested a diagnostics check for £69 even though I explained no error code was displayed on the camper van panel! I contacted VW for help but they would only suggest I contact the same dealer. Does anyone know of a reliable dealer able to diagnose electrical problems on the camper side rather than general vehicle probs?

I think you may have more joy if you gave a hint as to where you are located.
I can suggest South Hereford VW. Combined Car and Commercial Dealership with a good reputation regarding the California.

again as on the other post.. have had the same problems -initially no recognition that the ignition is on, failure to activate heater .. intermittent issue that went away .... now panel blank nothing working, fridge went off... its with the dealer who says all is well and there is no problem ......????

Hi did you evert manage to get this sorted as We have the same problem !!

Thanks alot

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem! Took van to my local dealer (Specialist Cars, Kirkaldy), they had it all day but couldn't solve the problem (they didn't charge me the expected £69 for checking error codes). Told me to bring it back and they would do more digging wit advice from experts in Edinburgh. Not had time to do ths yet but will and let you know the outcome.

Likewise, when I come across a solution I’ll let you know. I can’t help thinking it must be a dodgy battery issue as it works when the motor is running and will continue to work for a while once it’s turned off ?!!

There are, I think, 3 separate supplies going to the camper display, both from the vehicle electrics and also from the camping batteries. I wonder if the camper supply is not working and you have the display function from the vehicle side only and this will shut down when the BCU sleeps (when the interior lights go out on their own).

Test to see if display only works when the interior lights (by the rear view mirror) are on?
