Sorry for delay with info had a lot going on since I returned. Hope this helps.
Details re trip. Got cheap road maps WH Smith’s France, Belgium Amsterdam £4.99. Spain Portugal £4.99 plus Tom Tom Sat Nav.
Ferry from Poole to Cherbourg Sept £250 return. arrived 1.30pm. Used toll roads as I wanted to get to Spain ASAP. Drove to CAEN, A28 to LE MANS onto A28 TOURS then A10 POITIERS onto A10 NIORT A10 SAINTES A10 BORDEAUX then A63 to BAYONNE A63 to SAN SABASTIAN then head for VITORIA GASTEIZ then N1 to BURGOS. I stopped about 12 miles outside of BURGOS at a service station arrived at 2.30am. Then I Drove to Madrid in the Morning. Toll roads around 130 plus fuel France excellent service stations and places to stay expensive fuel and food and weather same as uk.
Spain great fuel prices €1.19 a litre food cheap and great roads good to, not so many toll roads and easier to get around. Having an original T4 Westfalia left hand drive made this trip a piece of cake. Well worth doing, although next trip I’ll do Santander ferry a bit more expensive. Hope this answers a few questions
