So I'm looking to insure my first California Ocean, 2018 model, and did a quote at comfort insurance, came out at just under £300 with over 15 years NCD. Now done it again as I'm closer to getting the vehicle but its now over £600? I dont get it why? I'm sure originally I entered the car reg but this time I don't have that option just is it a ford, yes or no, and who did the conversion professional or private. Well neither, its a California Ocean, VW did it in factory so can only assume this higher quote is because I've ticked the wrong quote box but there is only one, the 'Rising Roof Campervan'

So I've either done something wrong or the price is correct in which case I'll try someone else if there are recommendations. I'm over 50 too which I'd have thought brought down the price.

Confused.

Best ring them, 600 sounds steep.

I did, they said it's right. its too much and no idea why, I know the vehicle is expensive, £45k but still too much and annoying as I'm sure it was them that quoted lower before.

Just renewed mine with ccc £265.00 for fully comp protected no claims.

I don’t get it then. I’m
Quoted double that. No idea why. I must be entering wrong info somewhere. Maybe I’m not clicking on the right option for vehicle I’m choosing rising roof csmpervan. Maybe that’s wrong and only for conversions. If anyone can help it would be appreciated

I noticed this when I got an online quote off them, and as I commented in another thread:-

initially Comfort quote you on some basic details (they go in to more detail later when you accept the quote), this saves a lot of time if you're not happy with the cost at the end. Strange thing is at this point the only thing they want to know about the make is whether it's a Ford or not!
That was this year, and I went with them at £308 inc business use.

Insurance costs are a mystery to me. I have a multicar insurance through Admiral with my wife's Mini and coming up to renewal was quoted close to £640 (including comprehensive breakdown cover), which to be fair was lower than last years quote and my wife uses her car for business. I had not used the comparison sites for a couple of years so hit the 'ComparetheMeerkat' site for the best overall cost/cover compromise. I was surprised that I could not get a Multicar quote; individual vehicle quotes were needed.

I started a quote on the internet with Comfort but also had to phone them due to the same problem the OP encountered. It had taken a good 15 minutes to get that stage, wasting my time. Another half an hour on the phone and they quoted around £530 just for the California! (Admiral were charging £200 less for the Cali). I declined their offer. I then tried LV directly as they do have multicar policies. After nearly 30 minutes I got what I thought was a very competitive quote of £530 for both vehicles. I then asked if the habitation area etc of the Cali were included and was told 'I think so. I'm reasonably sure' to which I asked 'can you be absolutely sure'? 7-8 minutes later, she replied that non of the habitation area was covered! End of conversation.

I phoned Admiral to see what they could do and got their quote down to £580 FOR THE SAME COVER I HAD LAST YEAR! Why did they not give that price straight away? Well, we know why don't we? All companies will charge what they think they can get away with. On previous years I had asked Admiral if the habitation area was covered for all eventualities and had been told yes, so I was confident that that would be the same for this year but asked them anyway. I was told that 'We have never covered the habitation area'. WHAT???!!! Another 20 minutes of clarification that this was a factory built camper and not a conversion, Admiral stated that everything that was built at the factory is 'probably' covered but this matter has been referred to higher management and that I would get a phone call later in the evening. True to their word, they called and I was told that they would be covering ALL of the vehicle, just as they had done previously. Phew! Half a day on the phone and much frustration later, I had the cover I wanted and saved £80.

It just goes to show that you have to be so careful when purchasing vehicle insurance. Many insurers do not understand what the California is. Further more, when I was looking for the insurance on the Mini, there were many 'cheap' prices quoted but when you look at the policy details, there were big discrepancies in what they provide and what I wanted, making those companies potentially very expensive if a claim had to be made.

I do miss the very competitive UK car insurance rates! In Belgium, I'm paying around 2000 Euros for a California Ocean, comprehensive. If anyone from Belgium knows of a better deal, please let me know.

Insurance generally, is expensive in Belgium. Many drivers have fully comp only for about the first 3 years from new, and some not at all.

Started off trying to get quotes to insure my 2 cars, both starting cover in April 19, Admiral quoted £260, which was as saving of £70 over my existing cover with LV. I rang to clarify an issue with NCB and was asked if I had any other vehicles that I might want included on a multiycar deal ...... the bottom line, they will add the Cali to the policy from its renewal date in December for a total of £270 for the cars and the Cali! £10 for 5 months cover for the Cali! Obviously an introductory offer which I fully expect to shoot up when I renew in April.
I questioned, in some depth, whether the insurance covers the habitation areas and equipment and was assured it was covered. Now trying to get this confirmed in writing before coughing up!

Interestingly found this on their website, which suggests that they do cover the Cali ...

What type of insurance do I need for my campervan or motorhome? - Admiral.com

Thinking about purchasing a campervan or motorhome? Admiral gives you the low-down
If you like the idea of just packing up and taking off your next holiday, road trip or summer festival, check out our guide to find the right vehicle for you and how best to insure it.

What’s the difference between a campervan and motorhome?
Broadly speaking, a campervan is considered to be a self-contained travelling home, generally with no divide between the cab and the living quarters. A motorhome tends to feature an interior divide, and is built on a truck or bus chassis.

Additionally, campervans can be split into two further categories:

Standard campers contain fixtures and fittings which are built-in from manufacture and are part of the vehicle’s standard specification.

Camper conversions are typically a conversion of a van, either by a DIY build or a professional conversion built by specialists such as Danbury or Wellhouse.

A motorhome, however, is purpose-built and is a motorhome from first registration; they're coach-built using a conventional chassis cab as a base.

At Admiral, we identify the type of vehicle based on the registration number, and can therefore determine whether the vehicle is classed as a car or a van. It’s from this you’re then able to find the right type of policy for your vehicle – this may be MultiCar or Van Insurance.

What type of insurance do I need for my campervan or motorhome?
Admiral's five star-rated (Defaqto) Van Insurance covers all types of vans - small and transit up to 3.5 tonnes, and offers:

  • New vehicle replacement
  • Windscreen repair
  • Sat-Nav cover
  • Courtesy van
MultiCar Insurance covers all the cars in your household on one policy- it's flexible and, as long as all the cars belong to immediate family members, you don't even have to be registered at the same address to start your policy.

At the moment, you can't mix vehicle types, such as a car and a van, on the same policy.

• You can have cars and standard campers on the same policy

• You can have vans and camper conversions and motor homes on the same policy

• You cannot have vans and standard campers on the same policy

• You cannot have cars and camper conversions or motor homes on the same policy

Which camper should I buy?
We have found three great campers which we’re sure you’ll love, with examples of a standard camper, a camper conversion and a motorhome.

1) Volkswagen California Beach

Type: Standard Camper

Price: Start from £38,214

Features: Heated seats, two double beds, climatic semi-automatic air conditioning, body-coloured pop-up aluminium roof, high-gloss black grille with chrome trim

Admiral insurance type: Car insurance

The contemporary equivalent of the retro T2. The California Beach can come with either four or five seats as standard, with extra chairs available upon request. It doesn’t offer a kitchen, like its more pricy California Ocean counterpart, but cooking outdoors could allow consumers to save some money while also embracing the full camping experience.

Product manager for Volkswagen, Alice Halliwell, said: “The California is Volkswagen’s original, full factory-designed and produced campervan; compact and convenient enough to be used as an everyday vehicle, yet easily turns into a home-from-home for days out, weekend escapes or longer adventures.”

I would definitely recommend Admiral multicover. My renewal was £650 for the Cali with business use, my wife's car, buildings & content's including cover away from home for all the stuff I take on holiday in the Cali + an expensive mid-life crisis MTB.
Also had confirmed that it covered habitation areas and this is referenced on my policy schedule.
Have been with them for a while and whilst initial renewals always come in high they generally come back close to last year's price after a phone call.
Have also claimed from them on house insurance and found them very good in that respect too.

Due my paranoia over insurance ... I looked at Admiral' s website and saw that the definition of "modifications" is anything that was not standard and includes all options.
Luckily I have a copy of the non standard options that the first owner had spec'd. So Ive just added a list of 20 to my quote and no increase in the price!
In my ignorance I'd always considered "modifications" to be wider wheels, blue printed engines etc, not mud flaps!

I'm just doing the ring around at the moment to insure our soon to be picked up 2008 2.5 Cali.
Prices started at £415->£367 (Safeguard) then £272( Adrian Flux) and currently £237 (Just Kampers)
All quoting on 10k millage, 9+ years NCB

Next stop LV, Admiral & Comfort.
Never an enjoyable task, but it is nice to see the results of the labour.

Tried all the above giving all the extras and mods LV were the best on all fronts for me £293 with 15k annual mileage.

When I spoke to LV, they said that the habitation area was not covered...

Admiral came in at £188 but the chap struggled to 100% confirm the habitation was covered for cover when in use, but it would be covered if damaged in a motoring accident.
I’m thinking I’ll take this policy and check the policy wording, I believe I can cancel with no penalty ahead of the start date.

There aren’t many advantages to being a middle aged man leading a normal life, but it seems insurance quotes are one of them!

I’ve been trying to get an email address to get something in writing from Admiral confirming the details of their Cali cover but no luck!

That’s an interesting statement in Post 16.
These Non-Specialist Insurers, Do they cover All the Habitation equipment when in use or Only if damaged in a vehicle accident?

That’s the challenge.... getting someone in the insurance company to answer ..... in writing. I’ve got a while before mine’s due for renewal so I’m going to have a go!

Just about ready to give up with Admiral. They really don’t want to communicate other than by phone unless you have a policy number.
Their customer service email response was off hand and concluded by giving me a phone number and “Sorry we can’t help”.

If you do go with Admiral, once you have a policy number try submitting a query through their website. Be keen to hear how you get on.

Wasn't 100% convinced by Admiral habitation cover, plus once I'd tweaked the policy after adding wife to it, the difference wasn't massive compared to next price.

So have just taken out policy with Just Kampers, lets hope we never need to use it. 11 years of claim free motoring so far & I don't intend to ding the Cali!
