Noisy Parking Heater

Hello Cali fans,
During the night when the heating is running there is a TIC TIC noise going on (it stops when the heating is switch off). It is not too strong but enough to get annoyed... Is this something common or should (could) I get it fixed by VW? Many thanks and have fun.

That is the Fuel pump for the Diesel Parking Heater. It is normal. Some seem to be louder than others. On my 2014 I have to strain to hear the ticking but others have complained it is too loud. I don't think there is much that can be done to quieten the pump.

Compare it to another California to rule out “more noice than normal”. If normal, you could noise insulate the fuel pump. The fuel pump is behind splash guards underneath the left front seat. You need to remove the diesel cooler in order to remove the splash guard...

Check that none of the fuel pipes associated with the Nigh Heater are pressing against the floor. The pump sound can be transmitted along the pipe and onto the floor. To do this you will need to remove the under side plastic covers from both sides of the chassis and reach above the metal shield between the exhaust and the floor.

An 8mm socket spanner in an electric drill (set to screwdriver mode) is ideal for the screws, don't over tighten when replacing they are only screwed into plastic fixings. Pointed nose pliers or similar for the round fixing discs, BE CAREFUL THESE HAVE SHARP EDGES. They don't need to screwed back into place, just pushed up with a long tube or small (long) socket.

Re above, I don't think the diesel cooler (if you have one) needs removing, mine didn't on a T5 and does not exist on my T6.

Thanks for your reply.... I've to confess I didn't read the previous threads, however, I got several new insights from other members.

I’ve just noticed my heater making a clicking noise which I’ve never previously noticed (although it’s fair to say we haven’t used the heater much as we’ve only owned the van for 7 months). It’s a 68 plate T6 Ocean.
The heater itself does seem to be working.

Is this normal or should I be concerned?

you will miss the noise if it stops. I always listen out for it as a sign that the heating has indeed fired up as instructed! You will grow to love that clicking sounds... like the crackle of a nice log fire.
