Ferry Cheap

A tip - when you book a ferry list it as a car not a motorhome, as I used to until a friend called me a brush. Declare length and height accurately and choose model make and from the list. It's cheaper. ( Bear in mind the size of some modern cars such as Range Rovers )

I do this on Direct Ferries and often end up paying the same as a car so it's a good tip!

Brittany Ferries now use vehicle reg. to check model and relevant length & height category.

I'd assume other Ferries will adopt the same check method.

i always book as a vw Sharan, California is never listed. It always worked never had to pay extra even with a kayak on top or a bikerack at the rear.
The beligium reg. plate is connected on a name not on a car so it won't work.

Caravan & Motohome Club have great savings with Irish Ferries on Dover Calais. Much cheaper than Direct Ferries.

I used to do this with P & O and DFDS but once got a really horrible booth person at the port. Argue all you want about the footprint or that you can sleep in a car… then they charge you for a camper van at that days and times price…. Never done it again . It’s a risk.

Personally I have never thought there was much in it when choosing your vehicle type so I thought I'd have look today having just changed my number plate.
It won't have been updated on their (Brittany Ferries) site as yet (via DVLA) so thought I'd have a play.

Trip 14.06 - 21.06
2 Adults no extras

Existing Reg - Classified as Motorhome
Outbound - Afternoon Crossing - £155
Return - Night Crossing - £235

Existing Reg - Classified as 4x4
Outbound - Afternoon Crossing - £153
Return - Night Crossing - £233
A minor saving of £2.00 each way when classifying it as a Car/4x4

If I then start over and put my new reg in, it asks you to search. choose car/4x4, motorhome etc...
I then put Volkswagen (Make) California (Model) and then choose my options:

New Reg - Classified as Motorhome
Outbound - Afternoon Crossing - £170
Return - Night Crossing - £250

New Reg - Classified as 4x4
Outbound - Afternoon Crossing - £168
Return - Night Crossing - £248
Again, a minor saving of £2.00 each way when classifying it as a Car/4x4
BUT

Because my car isn't in their database they are wanting to charge me £15.00 more each way than a known Vehicle.
How bad is that!
