Best barbecue?

Hi all,

Just wondering what’s a really handy portable bbq to bring in the camper?

Thanks

Not a barbeque but when EHU, I use an electric hotplate and have done probably for the last 20 years great for breakfasts, lunch and dinner.

I use the aluminium foil liners on the Cobb so cleaning is really easy. Have put in whiskey smoking chips with the charcoal and the flavour/smoke ring on the meat is fantastic. I have a Kamado joe at home and honestly think the Cobb does a great job at replicating it on the road. Yes it does have its drawbacks (mainly size) and am sure the others mentioned on here are equally good.

Yep, agree.
Been there got the T-Shirt.
To much hassle to clean The Cobb.
Prefer the Weber Go Anywhere. Close the lid after cooking and return to the bag. It doesn’t need cleaning after every cook.

I have the cadac safari chef for speedy convenience (actually cook on it more than inside the van) had a weber smokey joe for years which is good, but not as great as the weber go anywhere. If I had my time again I would get the go anyehere with one of these... https://www.smokerig.co.uk/product/travelplancha/

I do a lot of BBQing at home and the Weber go anywhere is perfect for when I haven’t got my bigger ones.
You can cook direct for burgers and sausages or indirect for chicken, or anything else that needs roasting.
Packs down small and will last a lifetime if looked after, not that it needs much looking after

Another vote for the Webber go anywhere. I’ve had mine for around 12 years now! It’s still going. It’s been everywhere. I’ve cooked for 8 on it (not ideal) I’ve cooked everything from jacket potatoes, to chops, steaks, indirect whole pieces of meat fish or chicken. Fish works great in foil parcels. Then once cooking is done I use it as a fire pit I’ve lost the clip that holds the legs together when set up. I’ve melted one handle on the end (mines the older version which had handles on the end). The grill is corroded and knackered but it’s still going. I’ll replace it with....another Webber when I need to.

If anyone does want to swap a smokey joe (in bag) for a weber go anywhere I would do it... even throw in the smoker adaption I made for it 1586962096827.png

We use the SAfire Cooker for more then a year now. We use it with the barbecoco briquettes.
Starts up in 5 min. Very happy with it. Also perfect for baking pizza etc...
SAfire is very similar to the Cobb.

I had a Cobb, didn't really get on with it and sold it within the year. I now have a Webber go charcoal BBQ and it's great. It may depend on what you typically want to cook, but the Webber go suits me perfectly. Had it a couple of seasons now, great bit of kit.

Cobb for our van, Big Green Egg for Home; In- laws have Weber go anywhere in their static caravan.

All do an excellent BBQ!

For the record, having read all of this thread, and considered all options, i have decided to buy a Weber GO anywhere stove. I have gas in the van, and above all i like the idea of having a fire-pit after cooking outside, so I think it is the best option in that regard.

I own the Weber Go anywhere. It's a great BBQ, it's small, but let's be honest, even that takes up half of the room in the back of the Cali ;-).

I look at it this way: either I am in a country where I can't have an open fire/coal bbq and then I'm miserable ;-) or,... I'm in a country where I can and then this is my choice:

Looks simple, but the design is brilliant. 2 small vertical sticks that screw together to make 1 stick, that you stick in the ground. The grate is attached to the horizontal thingy and the horizontal thingy goes over the stick. You can easily adjust the hight of the grate by squeezing the horizontal thingy. Doesn't get hot. Just make a huge cave man-style fire or small effective one and your done. The grate can go up and down or swings left or right to allow for less heat or more heat. And it takes up exactly zero space in the van.

Hiya

Have been keeping an eye in this thread - Thanks for all the advice and various recommendations

Have managed to order a Skotti Grill from Addnature in Germany and it’s in its way

Bit small (grill surface the size of an A4 sheet) but for 2 people should be fine. I think the flexible fuel options and the pack away size did it for me. Particularly the fire pit option

Once it’s here I’ll be like a kid with a new toy and could give some feed back and a few photos if anyone’s interested

My only query now (hope someone can help on this) is where to get the gas!!??

I know it needs an EN417 screw cartridge with 7/16” x 28 UNEF thread but am struggling to find any at the moment. Anyone bought some of these recently??

Thanks in advance

EN417 screw cartridge, is simply a small gas cylinder for camping stoves, gas blow torch etc, I have Primus ones for my pocket rocket stove, most camping shops have, make sure it’s treaded as some are ¼ turn type long type for flat table top stove or short for Campingaz camping stove

Thanks Andy
I’ve seen some online but Coleman’s are apparently only for Coleman’s equipment and when you google EN417’s all kinds of things pop up which is frustrating.
C500’s
CV 450’s
CG3500’s
I guess the prefix is the clue to the fitting and the number merely volume or size. Ill look up Primus suppliers in UK and see if I can get some

Blow torch gas has same fitting & will work; Available in most hardware shops (we have used it in France a few times).

Below looks to have them in stock:

Or you can get an adapter via mail order to allow connection to larger camping gaz bottles:

Read this thread with interest.
I’ve got the cadac safari chef with a few extras like the risotto dish.
However the thing we use the most is a portable stove that runs on the little gas canisters that are £10 for 5 from go outdoors end season sale.
Maybe it’s because I bbq so much and all year round at home?
Any how good thread - I have the Weber 3200 deluxe so if I was after a charcoal bbq I would go for the Weber they really are excellent :thumb

Just search gas canisters on Amazon or eBay: these will do: 8 BUTANE GAS BOTTLES CANISTERS FOR COOKER HEATER BBQ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CE6P12E/?tag=eliteelect-21

this looks like a winner Thomas. Such a simple design
Can’t find that in Google other than an image on Pinterest for a Cameron’s fire pit grill which is similar
There’s something else similar on Amazon (Myard Stainless Steel 304 Portable Open Fire Pit Campfire BBQ Swivel Cooking Grill Grid Grate & Stake (Height Adjustable) but not in stock
If campfire were generally permitted in UK I’d go for one of those too

I've had a cobb, wasn't ideal to pack in a cali, even with its neat bag. Was a pain to clean too. Heat regulation was difficult at times. Overall an expensive but good looking piece of kit that has the advantage of being able to be used on the table and moved around in use.
I ended up selling it and replacing it with one of these for a fraction of the cost...

Once you learn to judge the amount of charcoal you need to use, it burns out and cools fairly quickly. Doesn't require cleaning. Just empty the ash, fold almost flat, put it in a rubble sack so it doesn't get anything else dirty and stash it anywhere.
Best thing about it is that it is stood up off the ground so doesn't burn the ground and you can even use it as a fire pit - awesome.
The one I have was slightly different and came with a metal case that folded out and sat underneath to catch any falling ash.
Absolutely excellent.
(I still have it, but having said how great it is, I've opted for the convenience of gas; Cadac... Instant on, instant off, quite big, but it doubles up as a second gas hob, to the small single burner which we keep under one of the slots in the three seater bench in our Beach) and cadac can also do amazing paella...we regularly use it at home too.

+1 for the 'folds flat' X-shaped BBQ that also then doubles as a small firepit. We even carry a small supply of split & dried logs for popping onto the embers for a cosy campfire glow as the light goes down. Ours is the Outwell version which has served us very well for 3 years. We have two portable camping stoves that we use if we want gas powered cooking (for everything else) and you can buy grill plates that sit on those too. It all depends on whether you want the ease of on/off that gas offers with the others v the duo use charcoal BBQ / Firepit of this type of solution. Folds back flat (less than 4cm depth) into the original box. Happy days.

+1 also for the Flat X type. We use one in Oz for tent camping. Packs away to nothing in a vehicle. Like you we use coals and then after dinner sit around putting wood on it.
Its strong enough to support a good size Iron camp oven for roasting too.
In Oz we paid about $25 which at the time was about £15.
Your link shows £38 which is extortionately priced I highly recommend them but I would shop around for a better price.
