What’s the point of this...?

GW with awning pulling a noddy car.
Surely, once you start pulling another vehicle, you may as well buy a Caravan...?
Then, you erect an awning on the mother as well...

Is it just me, or does this make absolutely no sense whatsoever?

Currently the caravan I pulled to Ferry Meadows today is parked next to me and I've just heard the pulling of a cork .... Awning is still in it's bag and our brand new bicycles have just had ab 8 mile bedding in run so I think that popping of a cork is a well deserved signal ....

and yes, to be honest, why tow anything but a caravan ... but then we all have our reasons.

Each to their own but I don’t get it. I think of my campervan as an escape vehicle that enables travel and experiences and allows me to carry adventure gear like bikes, snowboards, climbing gear and electric skateboard and to arrive and depart new locations rapidly without fuss. The idea of being stationary on one campsite for more than two days, to have to erect an awning and strip it down and pack it away in the rain, to be limited on what roads, lanes, tracks and car parks I can enter and to have the challenge of reversing back down a trail that can’t accept my massive white with a wee car on the back I can’t see while reversing sounds like a nightmare to me. As does sitting in a field with more neighbours than I have at home watching some nonsense on a television. This sounds like a restriction to travel and adventure not something that supports it. I could go on.

I struggle to know why anyone tows anything but a trailer of boats/bikes/etc. But then we all have our reasons....

I would rather not tow anything ...

and I must admit, towing a caravan with a bike rack fitted to the caravan carrying two bikes I found a novel experience today. ..... it must have looked a right sight to many.

He's made a tidy job of putting the awning up, nice
comfy chairs inside, decent wrap around front screen too, he's a seasoned
camper.

That could be their only car and its too small to tow a caravan so they had a
light bulb moment and bought a caravan to tow the car.

We used to full-time in a motorhome (before we saw sense and moved to something smaller!) and needed a separate car to run around in, go shopping etc. Although we looked at the idea of towing the car, the cost of having a tow bar fitted to the motorhome, adapting the car and buying the A-frame to connect the two was prohibitive so we just bought a couple of hand-held radios and my wife drove the car and I drove the van. Not ideal, but it worked.
There’s no way we’d have used something like this just to go away on holiday though, hence selling the motorhome and now looking forward to picking up our Cali in a couple of weeks time.
Keep it simple!

When we had a GW we would always take a car as well if going to Devon or Cornwall & staying in one place for a week or so. Nothing worse when you’ve got young kids than having the beach / shops too far to walk & spending a week worrying about parking & not being able to just pop out for a takeaway etc

Going to Scotland, France etc just the Motorhome on its own was fine.
If it was just 2 of us a scooter in the garage was even better.
It was one of the reasons we changed to a Cali.

It could be that sometimes they just use the motorhome, sometimes they want to go on a longer holiday and need a car to visit local cities etc.
To me it makes absolutely zero difference if they tow a car, a caravan or whatever.
I will still enjoy my holiday with my Cali.

Well,

blown my socks off.

We got them home then went for an 8.5m toddle around local streets. Went 3 miles with no power. Despite being heavy just felt so well balanced, but hard work, so switched to eco mode ....... OH SH!T .... suddenly 20% faster at half the effort. Just cruising...

Now in ferry meadows, aim to get to 20 miles a day, bearing in mind my sisters arthritic knees and hip and me just two weeks post calf surgery, 6 miles today, mostly without power assist, just click it on when there is the slightest suggestion of a hill, and the hill disappears.

Beautifully balanced, you feel as though you are riding on a well-engineered star act, as you should for £3k each, just lovely, relaxed cruising,

If you want to go at max assist, 15 mph limited, possibly not. If you want to go average 10 mph, lean back, enjoy the scenery, smell the ozone, just go and go and go, absolutely massive.

I guess they want the comfort of the MoHo, set up basecamp for a week and visit out in the car? Don't see an an issue. We intend to get a drive away, set up basecamp and nip out in the van site seeing? Any different? Didn't realise with a Cali you had to move daily and rough it? Tugging 2 ton of plywood doesn't appeal to me I have seen enough of it all over the M6. We are downsizing from a GW not mobile enough.

We sometimes take our car with us depending on plans - and we did the same with the Cali as well. With kids if one us wanted to go climbing or do a couple of hills dragging the van it’s occupants to a singletrack road for 9 hours to sit and wait wasn’t going to work. Some people don’t like towing vans but seem to be fine with diddy cars. Who knows. I quite fancy that Boxster setup, could take my 911 with me, might look into that !

Seriously, you might as well rent a car at your destination if you’re going to do that.

Hope the wine was good. So in answer to why tow anything but a caravan.

Well I am back with this whilst Caliless which has the benefit of being the same width of the car has a kitchen with fridge 240 hook up 2 double beds and tows beautifully passing most caravans on the motorway. Regularly dragged to Southern France and Spain.




We can set this up just as fast and usually faster than a caravan and have done copious amounts of times, which leaves more time for this.



Draw backs.
Has to be on a site, can't carry bikes and has to be opened out to dry if packed away wet.

Enjoy your holiday and can we have some more info on your new bikes please.

What one is that?

Looked long and hard at trailer tents. Towing caravans can be a right pain. Will try and get pics of us on our bikes today, they are specialised Como 4's.
