Just a tip to securely store your water bottle to prevent it from flying around in your VW camper during driving. I find the cupholder not suitable to hold a water bottle, so I thought about a solution. After some thinking and a visit to the local sports bike shop I found the solution. I mounted a bike bidon holder to the handbrake lever! Works like charm, and the water is kept out of direct sunshine, so stays fresher.
See the picture for detailed solution.

Does it not get in the way when you’re pulling handbrake turns around the campsite?

Ingenious, but personally I don't see the need of having a water bottle to hand. However did we manage in the past. If I want a drink I stop and get something from the fridge.
I just don't get the modern fad of having to carry a water bottle wherever I go and certainly not when driving.
But each to his own.

I used to have the same opinion, but it seems like while I am getting older and the summers are getting hotter I drink more water

Trying to drink 3 Ltrs a day is actually hard work. Love this idea

Because its not needed, medically.
Although the body, depending on weight, might require 3L fluid a day, but half of that comes from the food you eat.

Does a bottle of Malbec fit?

In the UK it is illegal to drink or eat whilst driving. Some have been fined whilst waiting at traffic lights and having a quick 'kit Kat'. (tempted to say Nibble but )

Can you point to the law stating this? Was reading the RAC website and they say this is an urban myth.

However you could be prosecuted for careless driving if you are distracted.

Also looking for advice on this. I do take a drink (coffee or water from enclosed containers) on straight stretches of the A90 with no traffic in front or behind. I can agree it is not wise on busier or smaller roads. But was not aware it was illegal. If so I will changed my driving habits.

welshgas, thank you for your sage advice.
however I think I will trust the instruction given to me by the specialist kidney consultant who took my kidney stones out. Oh yes and backed up by the consultant who prescribed my gout medicatio.
they both used the specific words “ you need to try to physically drink 3 Ltrs of water a day“ emphasising drink! Not relying on hydration from other intake.
I prefer to follow that advice to help delay the next kidney stone or gout attack.

Highway Code : This can be a reason for a Police Officer to deem that you are not in control of the vehicle, no different to using a phone.

Not saying that I have never eaten or drunk anything but take care when/where I have done it in view of both the risk from not being fully aware of the road activity and potential fine. One of those open to interpretation as to whether it indicates a failure to Drive safely.

British motorists could land themselves a hefty fine if they are caught eating or drinking behind the wheel.

The offence also carries a three-point penalty, potentially pushing British motorists over the twelve-point limit and temporarily costing them their licence.

As it stands, eating and drinking while driving is not illegal, but should the food or beverage causes a distraction to the driver, then it can be categorised as "careless driving".

Careless driving currently carries a fee of £100 and and three penalty points for people whose driving is affected.

Rule 148
Safe driving and riding needs concentration. Avoid distractions when driving or riding such as

  • loud music (this may mask other sounds)
  • trying to read maps
  • starting or adjusting any music or radio
  • arguing with your passengers or other road users
  • eating and drinking
  • smoking

Thanks @B J G
I never eat at the wheel... whilst I am constantly asking other friends not to...
Maybe I need to be more careful on my water and coffee slurps...

This is a guidance statement, not a legal requirement. The highway code is only a legal requirement if the rule contains a "must" or "must not"

Sorry @B J G , This quote supports my argument

I don't think anyone is disagreeing that drinking or eating whilst driving could lead to careless driving but I haven't seen anything that says the act of drinking or eating while driving, on its own, is illegal.

Ok, on the bottle holder ”hack” i find it ingenious but for me impractical. I will certainly knock the bottle off if i climb from my seat to the inside of the van.
the bottle of water i use for drinking while driving is placed on the door storage. easy to grab with one hand while keeping the eyes on the road.
If driving in summer with A/C on is certainly advisable on long journey to drink some.
I tried the 3litres of water trick, i pee every 10 mins!!
And regarding the law, i can’t see a cop fining you for drinking from a bottle of water using one hand. what’s the intent of the law? Stopping you from eating pizza whilst driving, not drinking water from a bottle!

do not advise drinking Malbec during driving
Maybe, but it is not (in the UK) unlawful to drink alcohol while driving... unless your act of slurping from the bottle causes your driving to be "below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver" in which case you could be committing an offence of driving without due care and attention under Section 3ZA(2) of the Road Traffic Act.

If it is medically prescribed then that is different. A nugget of information you failed to mention.

Treated many patients over the years who over drank water and ended up in hospital with hyponatremia and hypokalaemia from following this urban myth, “ Must drink 3L water/ day”, no matter what.

If you have hypercalcuria or hyperuraemia, then you have a metabolic problem and the treatment can include drugs, diet and additional fluid to flush the excess metabolites.

Someone with normal metabolism and diet should drink when thirsty and not drink when not thirsty. The body and kidneys will do the rest.

Glad to know! I felt guilty after a tasting during a visit at Talisker a few years back
