Hi I have just renewed the road tax on my 2017 150 DSG California and it’s around £470 for the year.
This seems a lot and I thought the road tax reduced as the van got older but it is the same as last year. Is it correct?

Reduces after year five due to it being over £40k in value.

If it had been March 2017 or earlier then it will have been £240/year only...each year.

In April 2017, the VED changed for higher fees.

Yeah mine is up for renewal 30th June and its £475, this is the my 2nd payment at that

Yep, same for the 204. Paid mine last month...:(
Stings a bit, especially as I can’t camp in it at the moment.

Not quite correct . Mine is December 2014, £325 last renewal.

I have just checked. I have paid £230/year and not £240/year. March 2017 Ocean 150 DSG.
I bought at 16 months old, and knew that I had a March 2017 first registered cut -off for the reduced VED.

Out of interest what’s the VED on a new 6.1 Cali?

You are correct for your vehicle so to say "prior to March 2017" means all vehicles? There have been a number of changes to VED over the past few years and vehicles for different years can have very different VEDs.

Our Van currently Sorned, will wait until beginning of next month to pay the dreaded 475 Groats to the Taxman.
I knew from the outset what we were getting into, but with the recently changes made I feel he is just taking the p***, ripping off the small minority of MY17 to MY20 Cali Owners. Sheriff of Nottingham or what? Where's Robin Hood when you need him. Guess he's in the forest with the lovely Maid Marrion Wild Camping & dodging his taxes!

For a second there, I read "he's in the forest with the lovely Maid Marrion Wild Camping & dogging" :) where's those reading glasses...
Don't worry your not on your own, am always getting things wrong these days, esp with this bloody corona drink that's going round, hey ho the over 60's club !

Paid RFL of £265.00 back in March 2020 on 2013 140 (ps) SE up £ 10.00 on last year,been £ 10.00 increase each year from 2017 !

VW Dealer has advised me the Road tax for a T6 Cali Ocean 199DSG registered this month 2020, is £270. Is this correct or not?

I am glad I live in Belgium for that.
My SE is considered as a campervan. It is in the same league as a van, so the road tax is €132 per year, as from year one.

Seems correct as due to the Motorhome industry getting organised on the political front about being 'penalised' with the higher taxation rates, that Cali's have been subjected to with no action from VW, they have succeeded in getting them put back on commercial van rates. Spin off is that the Cali has followed this even although it was no longer classed as a Motor Caravan.
Bureaucratic logic makes it all clear as mud.
Needless to say it isn't backdated.
Not seen any confirmation as to speed limit restrictions applying or not as yet. Might have missed that bit of info.

As a second hand 2017 cali bought in june this year when the 5 year anniversary in oct 2022 is would it be worth sorning the van for a week so i get nearly 10 months back and the only paying on the reduced rate at 5 years not sure if this would work as could save £300?
Have got 2 years to work that one out!

You could be lucky and DVLA have not thought of that but somehow I think not.
When you Sorn a vehicle you get reimbursed unused whole months. But when you take it off Sorn you would have to pay for 12 or 6 months so you would go beyond your Oct 2022 date, by the length of the Sorn period before you would get the reduced VED.

Just got mine in renewal now. It’s £250

My 2006 T5 2.5l 130 is £585 each year
2.5's can be in the 'Chelsea Tractor' high VED rate.
One of the reasons that I changed my Discovery 4 some years ago.

Yippee! This month I pay the last annual high rate for my Caravelle, so at last free from one government swindle. I find it hard to understand how the chancellor (Osbourne) managed to impose this corrupt tax on £40K plus motorcars without attracting a nationwide uproar.
The tax has nothing to do with emissions or any nuisance relating to use of the vehicle. In fact, there are similar models under £40K and not subject to this tax - some that are only being so taxed because of upgraded accessories (e.g. leather upholstery/automatic transmission/climate control, etc.) which takes the price above the £40K mark.
And this tax is applied in most cases to money paid out of already-taxed income. It doesn’t apply to any other purchases - such as £40K plus being spent on jewellery - and application is only possible because of the requirement to re-tax the vehicle annually.
Also, I notice that the DVLA have increased the surcharge along with the emissions element of the tax. I have never read anywhere that this increase would be applied in future years, so are the DVLA actually operating illegal increases? Wouldn’t be the first time a government department have been caught with their pants down!

Just had my tax for July Expecting £565 bill but all previous comments and suppositions have just been proved wrong!
It proves on 5 anniversary the extra added on for cars over £40k does drop off.
my Tax bill for july includes the extra upto end oct then it drops to the £165 for year and this is done even though it was partially SORNED at one time. 5 year anniversary is Oct this year.
Happy Days
