Just had a quote from LV my present insurer. Full NCB £300 xs Fully comp etc. 6000 miles a year use.
£235. 54 !!!!! AMAZINGLY CHEAP! Though we do live in the middle of nowhere and can garage the Cali when at home. Also i am rather old which i suppose helps.

Way better than my renewal price from lv of £1110!! On hold now for over 20 mins to cancel the renewal

Comfort insurance online quote £628, for 2020 cali ocean. £300 excess, 90 day euro cover, 8000 miles per year. Phoned them to take out the policy and it’s now £450!

Do other insurance providers just pull figures out of the air?

We are with LV. Great first year quote - like yours - doubled the second year. Will look to change this year. We have also read on here they seem to be quoting as a Transporter rather than a Motorhome and as such may end up being unnecessarily complex in the case of a claim.

After concerns here that LV don't know they are insuring a campervan, I rang back and spoke to a manager. They explained everything is covered, including eg camping equipment, camping fires or someone accessing the van via the pop top. I was happy they understood potential claims, but am less happy with the increase from under £500 to over £800 in 2 years.
I'll be scanning the market in October.

They know exactly what it is California Ocean 150. To be honest i was thinking of getting a Transporter Kombi to begin with and was getting quotes double the California. Insurance is just bonkers!

Perhaps the kombi is lumped in with builders vans, a magnet for thieves?

UK Campervan insurance seems to be on par with Germany now. Even with the 10% premium increase for 2024. Fully cpmp with extra coverage for valuables and stuff like the Ti Brommie, laptop, projector etc and a 250Euro deductible I'm paying about 825 Euros annually through Kravak with a 12,500 km annual limit.

Just renewed with Admiral 20% increase this year but only £303 - which I still think is a bargain.

Lucky you. Mine is almost 4 times that!

Bargain, my letter just turned up from VW, £2,503.20 :D
Wow! is that on your new GC? I was surprised that my Sven was less to insure than my Cali which I thought odd?

We are with LV and have just recently renewed. After reading some comments on here about “proper Motorhome insurance “ I did check with LV that we were fully covered. Our certificate stated VW California but apparently it should have included the word motorhome. This change pushed the price up a bit but still got it for 437.00 and 9000 miles.

Same as Kev T6 had to make sure it is insured with LV as a motorhome did increase premium. All LV prices have increased this year. I believe they have been taken over.

No that was on my Ocean! I got one year's free insurance with it so perhaps it's VW's 3 Year Promise; one year 'free' and then charged for the year I've already had, the new year plus an extra year for good measure :D

Pick up my GC on Wednesday so still in the process of navigating the insurance for that. Funnily enough one year to the day since I picked up the Ocean :)

We have a 2018 Cali Edition and found that comfort are the least expensive for the best cover. Last year we paid £240 - this year, despite not claiming a single penny it’s bumped up to £355 !!

Still the best deal I could find though.

The devaluation of our money continues…..

All insurance prices have gone up a lot this year, not just for motorhomes. But I've been with Safeguard for 8 years and mine only went up about £50. Most years the increase has been very small, and the one year that I shopped around the best quote was only a fi er less than Safeguard so not worth changing.

I am finding the opposite, I am looking at getting my first California and can't believe the cost of insurance. The few that will insure me want £1000. I currently have a combi and quotes on a new one are around £450. I Combis are insured as vans and I have full NCB on that I suppose. AM a bit gutted as it's making me rethink the California purchase.

Be careful of amazingly cheap quotes. If you are involved in an accident the insurance company may send you to a body shop repair company who is NOT VW authorised. If you use that body shop, it will invalidate ALL your VW warranties (e.g. anti-corrosion warranty). You can still opt to use a VW authorised body shop but you will need to pay an additional premium on top of your excess to do so.

Yes...I can use VW body shop but would need to pay an additional £150 in the event of a claim. I can live with that.

Spare a thought for a Grandad attempting to insure a VW Beetle (51 plate), worth about £500, first car for my 17 year old newly qualified Granddaughter - any suggestions gratefully received?

Agreed - cheapest is not always the best. A dedicated insurer for MH/Camper Vans is prudent, as they know what is what about a specific vehicle. Also having your new vehicle covered for a new replacement in the first two years should the worst happen is a must. A few years ago, son bought new car - a week later was hit by uninsured driver who overshot a stop sign junction pushing son's car into oncoming vehicle. Hit NS sill, A pillar and front of vehicle damaged.
Son had GAP insurance and in a nutshell GAP and motor insurance companies came up with two different valuation figures, 2k difference. GAP higher, Admiral lower. GAP eventually sent their settlement figure back to invoice of vehicle cost. Admiral wouldn't budge. Sent several ad images of like for like vehicles to replace. Enter Mr Ombudsman (who were excellent) which took nearly 12 months to settle after lengthy correspondence, with Admiral dragging their feet, 2k finally paid out. Rewind back, Admiral arranged one of their repairers to assess damage, said it would cost 4k to repair. Asked for a 2nd opinion from Ford body shop repairer (they covered the cost to collect) who declared the vehicle a write off. Said as A pillar was pushed in, would need a new roof and not worth it. Remember, you can choose where your vehicle is repaired, don't be hassled by your insurance company to use their 'broker' company who do all the donkey work for them. A year later Admiral wanted son to go to court to support them in getting back their 'out of pocket' money from the un-insured driver. Son said something like +~#:&%$.

Me too. But some may blindly follow the insurance company recommendations because they don't necessarily make the point clear.

I feel very sorry for youngsters trying to get insurance. We went through it ourselves back in the day but nothing like as bad as it is now.
