I’m thinking of taking the Sparesafe off of my old 5.1SE (2015) and putting it on my brand new 6.1. Will it compatible? I’m not sure if they will be slightly different in size. Should I anticipate any other problems? – I’ve not needed to moved it in all the years that it has been on.

When you take it off, repaint it before putting it on the new van! Bright red is the only colour that works! ;)

First, carefully remove the label, get the flaky paint and rust off! Scraper, belt sander, 2 or 3 days soaking in vinegar, more a ox sanding and then 2 coats of dark grey oil undercoat and 2 coats of grandad’s red oil gloss.IMG_0768.jpegIMG_0874.jpeg

But now, putting it back on!
The three pin socket head previously had a translucent rubbery shroud on it which has since perished. See below:

I think that I previously decided to not bother using what you are supposed to use due to reports of the plastic and metal caps being difficult to remove. In fact, I don’t really understand how these bits should be used with the three socket head. Is it just the metal hex cover that is supposed to cover the three socket head? Or, should the 2 part black plastic cover stay on too?

Metal bit goes over the bolt head as a cap to keep the holes free of mud etc & stays on.
The two plastic bits assemble together to make a tool that fits over the metal & is used to pull the metal cap back off the bolt.

Thanks Andy, except now it’s stuck on:confused:

A bit of a long shot but I don’t suppose you still have the the pin and retaining bolts for the spare wheel bracket? And if so would you sell them to me?! VW want a stupid amount of money for a couple of bolts and a bit of coat hanger

Good luck with the ‘transplant’.

I think that I might still be needing them, but yes wholeheartedly agree about VW prices. And, many thanks.

No problem, it was a very long shot. I’ll have to dig out the quote but from memory VW wanted c.£165 for a few bolts and the wire ‘hinge’!

I pieced these bits together recently to fit a carrier I already had. Total cost was around £25, bolt and spacers c.£20 and the hinge / pin was c.£5. Widely available on the internet or through dealers parts dept. Expensive for a few bits of metal yes, but surely the c. £165 you are quoting must include the carrier itself?

That’s what I thought but I was explicit that I had the carrier. They actually gave me a print out of all the parts I needed and it didn’t include the carrier. I'll try and dig it out as it seems so excessive that maybe I’ve missed something! £20-30 is about what I was expecting with the usual OEM premium

They looked my van up on the system and as it was specced with 18” wheels it didn’t come with a spare or the carrier but I assume all the fixing points are there as standard.

Well, finally had time to refit my sparesafe. I was so pleased to be able to remove all of the flaking paint and rust. I also got a good gloss on it. The cherry on the cake was being able to carefully remove the label, clean it up and then stick it back on!
One problem, but no one will notice will they? :D :D :D :D

If all else fails you could sell it to an Australian Cali owner?
