Posting by phone and smileys etc

I can post to forums on my laptop with full functionality - smilies, links, upload photos etc. However, on my phone I can’t. The little toolbar drops down, but then I can’t click anything.
To be clear, it’s ok when I’m reacting, but not when I write a reply. What am I doing wrong. (iPhone 11 Pro Max iOS 17.6.1). Any ideas?

I get the three dots. The row of tools drop down: face, quote, picture etc, but I can’t actually click them. Odd. I’ve tried restarting my phone.

That button toggles edit mode I think.
Bumper protector is not on yet, but it’s on my to do list

Also, silly question, but if you start to write a reply, but then change your mind, can you abort the reply?

I asked my 19 and 22 year olds. They find it funny that I post on here (and have for the past 9 years). Now they find it hilarious that I don’t know what I’m doing.
