Hi all,

I have just returned from a 3000 mile round trip down through France & spain over the last 2 weeks with an average of 37.5 mpg over the whole trip, the van picks up well & had some good climbs, so power is there.

However coming back last night from the tunnel there was a hell of a lot of rain/spray on way home. (As a note we had 2 days of heavy rain in France on way down, but had 30 + degrees down in spain)

I go to check van this morning, oil & coolant all spot on, oil cap clear, but I do check to pipe into the inlet manifold for oil & clean it, however this morning there is a bit of moisture ( clear water not coolant) & emulsified oil, I have cleaned as much as I can & started up & all seems normal.

Has anyone else had this or could it be a blown hose or the intercooler allowing a bit of rain water in?

The cali is a 180 103k, oil is changed every 5k & uses about 100ml- 250ml between changes. No coolant loss at all & oil temp max seen is 113 when climbing long hills under power at motorway speed, but drops & sits at 95 - 100 all the rest of the time, so not worried about the dreaded egr cooler, which by the way is still the original item with no prefix!

Any help gratefully received, or am I going to have to get the bumper off & remove the intercooler to check/clean?

Cheers all

Exactly which vehicle/year have you got?
You mention 180 in your post and your Avatar says T7 4Motion.
It is not uncommon to get some emulsified oil in the dipstick tube on a Transporter when there is a significant change in ambient temperature and humidity because of its length and it’s position.
More often reported on the T6 which has a longer oil dipstick tube

Seems odd to have that after such a long drive when everything should be nice and hot etc?

Did you check the hose at the Intercooler end?

These engines barely rev at all. At motorway speed I’m not sure how much they’re boosting?
Perhaps take it for a drive Find a hill and leave it in third. Floor it and hold it there to give it a good blow out. Repeat and monitor the oil build up.

Morning welshgas,
Mine Is a 2010 t5.1 , not sure why a t7 is there????
No emulsified oil in dipstick tube only in intake side, however did notice that taking off the outtake from turbo to intercooler is clean, apart from a tiny bit of oil residue, no emulsified oil, so does leave me to believe intercooler or the pipes may have a split or damaged in some way as its only on the one side of the intercooler.
Bumper off then I think, replace with mayle or Valeo item or is there a good other type that is more sturdy, not after power boost & don’t want to spend mega bucks if I can help it.
Cheers for the help

I think Valeo may be OE? I put one on my aged Golf earlier this year. Seems ok so far.

Is the intercooler part of the rad pack including the ac condenser or can you remove it without needing to recover the refrigerant?

Hopefully it will be separate!
I was looking at either of the 2 I said, but will look next weekend when the weather allows me together the bumper off & see what is on the original without paying OEM prices!!!!
