Losing oil somewhere?

Just to revive this thread I have a sneaky suspicion that our 180 is possibly starting to give problems. It's using a very small amount of oil between services but seem to be using more fuel and I feel that torque is lacking sometimes. The Millers oil test shows significant amounts of aluminum, some iron and boron in the oil after around 5kmiles. Its a 2014 currently on 75k, original A type EGR, and serviced every year. I'm very surprised that VW consider 1L/1000km passable. To me that is just plain ridiculous. I have spoken to the service manager who I know quite well and he has confirmed that VW will not consider any kind of contribution on these engines after eight years, It also seem that when you get a new engine from VW it isn't brand new, it's refurbed unit. The only time you get an brand new unit is before twelve months is up so even in the last two years of warranty you only get a refurb.
The van is booked in for a compression test with our local VW specialist next week so depending on the result of that will depend on what we decide to do. Again the VW limits on what they consider to be OK compression seem very low to me. If it's what I consider to be OK then there is an option either to get the EGR blanked off or fit a stainless steel unit. These are actually made by the same company that make the VW ones so there is another mystery, why the hell VW don't fit them as standard.
If it's knackered or going that way then it will off to RetroResus for one of their refurbed units, blanked EGR and DPF.

You may be aeare that blanking off egr and dpf is an illegal modification. All modifications must be notified to your insurance provider who may well then cancel cover as the vehicle tehnically is no longer road worthy/compliant.
Bit of a catch 22 as not notifying insurance of all modifications also invalidayrs insurance.

Good luck with your resolution.

Sorry to hear this. I'm in the same boat and in the process of getting a Millers oil analysis. However, since I posted I have had contributors telling me not to despair and in the calm light of day, I think that there is potentially a long way to go before getting a replacement engine. I think now that I may be suffering CFCA anxiety induced by all of the bad news on this forum.
I also am very surprised that VW think that an oil consumption of 1 lit/1000 km is passable, but having once driven a Mercedes truck to Greece and back consuming 28 litres of oil on the journey, who am I to argue? (Admittedly I did know there was a problem, but this was the least expensive option in using the truck).
I'll be interested to hear how you proceed. Perhaps we should start a forum category for owners who have experienced this and their solution?
