Hi there,

I am new to this forum and have found many previous threads incredibly useful in learning about the Auxiliary heater and how to go about troubleshooting it, however I don't think I have found a thread describing the exact problem we are running into, so was hoping some of the very knowledgable people here could help us and any others that might be experiencing something similar! We would be incredibly grateful for any advice.

We have a 2021 T6.1 Ocean California TDI S-A which we bought from my parents, who purchased it new from Volkswagen and like a lot of other people we are now having problems with our Auxiliary heater.

We are having a similar problem to other users in that when we try to use the Heat continuously mode, it will cycle through the Please Wait loading screen and then the heater light turns off, with no apparent signs or sounds of the heater trying to turn on.

When we try to use the Heat Immediately mode, it will turn on the heater light then cycle through the please wait screen on and off until to you turn off the Heat Immediately mode, which you can manage to do between "Please Wait" screens if you are quick!

We also get the Error: Auxilliary Heater when we try and access the Operating mode or settings page.

As you can tell we are kind of getting a strange combination of errors other people seem to be experiencing.

We are unsure exactly when this issue started for us, but we did have a period of time where the van was being stored at another location due to expensive insurance and experienced a few flat batteries when we would go to start it. This resulted in us getting Solar Panels fitted to the van which charge both the leisure batteries and the starter battery. This was done by a small business that works specifically on VW Californias. So we are wondering if this could be related as we have read some information on low batteries triggering some issues!

Again, we would really appreciate any advice on how to try and troubleshoot this.

Thank you in advance and hope you all have a good weekend staying dry from the storm!

i believe that 'going for a drive for 10 minutes' resets the ridiculous heater controls on the 6.1 so just charging the batteries may not be the answer.

1. The Heat Immediate function using the remote has a 120 minute maximum runtime in total. It can only be reset by driving a few miles. It is designed for pre-warming the vehicle.

2. If the Leisure Battery voltage drops below 11.5v the Parking Heater and Fridge will switch Off.

3. If there is less than a 1/4 tank of fuel the Parking Heater will switch Off rather than drain the fuel tank and leave you stranded.

4. I think you need to Reset the Control Panel. Simple on the T6 and T5 but a little more complicated on the T6.1.

See below, a useful summary by a Forum Member, specifically for the T6.1

Per 2 of the posts above. You’ll need to drive the van for a while to clear the countdown timer of 120 minutes for Heat Immediately mode. We had the same head scratcher moment when our van was new to us, and I saw a California Chris video that showed what we were doing wrong.

But, to clear any doubts about the diesel heater, have you tried it on Heat Continuously mode, and does that work?

Thank you everyone for your comments, I really appreciate you all taking the time to help us!

I have watched the video you mentioned which definitely helped overall understanding of how it is supposed to work!

Sorry I should have said in my original post what we have tried so far! Thanks to the commonly mentioned troubleshooting suggstions on a few other posts on this forum.

Unfortunately the taking it for a short or long drive doesn’t resolve the issue for us.

None of the settings result in the aux heater switching on, so neither immediate heat or continuous heat.

We have tried it both using the leisure battery and electric hook up which also made no change!

We have reset both the control panel and aux heater fuses also to avail!

All of this was tried with leisure batteries and starter battery fully charged and we have a full tank of fuel.

So a bit stuck on what to try next aside from paying someone to take a look!

Again, thank you again for taking the time to reply!!

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the heater to me. Stuck fan or blocked fuel intake? Might be worth having a good look with a torch before spending money.
