VIP Discount New VIP Discount Partner: Safeguard Insurance

So, the Safeguard saga continues. They now confirm that they can't insure Beach models at all. If you call, they put you through to a sister company, who check a panel of insurers. No discount – and a quote double anything else I've had. Not a great partnership deal after all.
I contacted Comfort today and explained that I've got a new VW California due to be delivered next week.

Adviser: Is that an SE?
Me : No a Beach
Adviser: Ocean?
Me : No a Beach
Adviser: Is it registered as a motor home?
Me: Not sure - I haven't seen the V5 yet. I'm getting it next week
Adviser: What has it got inside?
(Yes - she did say that)
Me: Erm - a pop up roof, 7 seats
(long pause)
Adviser: Where will it be parked overnight?
Me: On my driveway
Adviser: Please hold
I lost the will to live after 2 minutes and hung up

I've had enough hassle with insurance companies who know what vehicle they are insuring.

Imagine the hassle of claiming here? Too risky for me.

I'm now losing the will to insure too. Spent an hour trying to do an online quote through the glitchy Camping and Caravanning Club site. Eventually got a quote of £400, which changed not a jot with lower coverage, club membership or anything! Tried over the phone only to be told that there was a minimum under which they couldn't go. And that included not honouring the promised membership discount.
Oh, and I had to call my Beach a 'motor caravan'...aagh. I've entered a world I didn't want to know about.
I have now bought and paid because I couldn't bear it any longer.

I think it is clearly a case of go with a normal insurance company for the beach as it is just an MPV to them, and go with the specialist companies for the SE/Ocean as it is officially classed as a Motor Caravan.

My renewal with Comfort came up at £262. Out of interest I rang Safeguard for a quote and with the special forum discount their price was £360, when asked if I wanted to proceed I mentioned my renewal quote and suddenly an "extra" discount appeared magically taking my quote down to £240 with unlimited mileage, breakdown cover, new for old etc. Happy days. :bananadance

I have ust spoken to several of the insurers that either partner with us or advertise on the forum and they have ALL confirmed that the Beach is not classed as campervan in the eyes of the underwriters and they said the Beach is classed as much higher risk than a SE/Ocean as they seem to think that Beach owners will use the van as a daily vehicle.

Safeguard have however said they can still honour the 10 for 12 deal on a Beach but it will be via their sister company.

And now a quote from the Camping and Caravanning Club for £377 and one from Saga for £393. I can't bear to do another quote, so fingers crossed that everyone loves one of these choices! Probably not Comfort after reading on the forum about the 36-hour rule (unattended storage that sounds like a get-out for too many claim scenarios).
CC. Have dealt with them in the past when a brand new 25' caravan was written off courtesy of National Express coach that hit the rear offside with its wing mirror. Snaked and ended on its side. They dealt with everything and a brand new caravan was on the drive within 6 weeks. Would have been sooner but I had to have the new year model.

Just taken out policy with safe guard. £260 cheeper than VW and also includes roadside assistance. Very pleased I decided to shop around

I am also in middle of insurance renewal and just out of VW warranty and therefore VW Europe breakdown cover. Thought I would shop around and Safeguard's quote, which includes AA UK + Europe breakdown cover and sounds attractive, works out less than renewing with existing insurer and then buying AA European separately...

HOWEVER, according to their policy booklet, Safeguard insurance covers territorial limits which appear to exclude places such as Croatia and Bosnia, but do cover others such as Serbia, whilst their AA Europe breakdown cover only appears to cover mostly EEC Member States (plus Iceland and Norway).

So if you are planning an adventurous European trip, important to note that the two listings do not appear to match up! Interestingly, if you buy AA Europe breakdown cover separately, one of their options covers almost all of Europe.

We've just changed from LV to Safeguard (price). The post above prompted me to have a look at the countries covered vs. LV. The Safeguard list is longer than LV's but as you say doesn't include Croatia, whereas LV's does. This does seem strange so I wonder if they just forgot about Croatia.

The policy also says that travelling between the listed countries is included, so I guess that would then include Bosnia and Croatia to reach Serbia and Bulgaria.

I would say that travelling between countries means exactly that. For example whilst on the ferry between England and France. If your example is suggesting traveling through a country to get to another then I would want that confirmed. Guessing and insurance are not good bed fellows.

I have been speaking to Safeguard regarding insuring our shortly to be delivered 204 Ocean. They need to know what is the make and model of the alarm fitted? Apparently, the fact the alarm is a Thatcham cat 1 approved system is not sufficient - can anybody advise?
Many thanks
Had this conversation with Safeguard two days ago. The call centre operator was reading from a script and clearly had a problem ticking the relevant box when I said my brand new vehicle has a VW factory fitted "Thatcham cat 1 alarm system". She needed to know if it was the alarm or the immobiliser that is Thatcham cat 1. I checked with the dealer and he said BOTH as it is a combined system. When I told her this she accepted it was OK. I chose Safeguard because I got a good deal I think. £301 pa for new T6 based on 11 years no claim discount. Thanks VW Cali Club for this!

Yes on closer reading it's 'air, rail or sea'. At some point I'll ask about Croatia, because we hope to get there some time.

I would certainly check with insurer in advance of any visits to countries that may not be covered. We would certainly recommend Croatia, our own experience was of being in Austria and because we were away for two months, of continuing into Slovenia and then Croatia, but only because we knew insurance and breakdown covered these countries.

Hi, I am sorry to see you had a negative experience on a call with us. If you would like to provide us with more information such as the time then we can listen to the call and use it for future training to ensure it does not happen again.

I thought it might be helpful to clarify Comfort's position on this matter.
We can insure a VW beach. If it is converted and registered as a motorhome we would use one underwriter and if it is not we can still insure it but would use a different underwriter. We also cover Slovenia and Croatia as part of our policies. Hope this helps.

Just saved over £80 discount from Safeguard compare with Direct Line which shows what exceptionally good value being a VIP member is!!

Try Caravan Guard underwritten by Royal sun Alliance. On A 30k Cali £297 inc Breakdown Legal expenses and bonus protected. Free Phone.
Caravan Guard turned out best for us as well. £140 cheaper than Safeguard even after their discount. Paying £380 for a £37k Cali including European breakdown cover. Being German I only have a full EU license which ruled me out of Comfort.

I just got insure with Safeguard - protected no claims (14y), Legal assistance and AA Roadside recovery from home and no mileage limit. Very pleased!

“Safeguard UK offer a bespoke campervan & Motorhome insurance”

There seems to be some confusion here. It does not apply to everyone.

I Just Called Comfort to be told we do not insure the Beach.

I explained the recommendation from the owner’s forum but still a no.

I was redirected to Scenic Motor Home & Caravan Insurance 08005544724.

They were very helpful and gave me an excellent quote.

But said they could not give any discount relating to the VIP partner.

So no discount for the California guys with the basin and the bucket.

I think this should be made clear who can qualify to save any further confusion.

sorry guys what I should have said is I just Called Safeguard and not Comfort.

I got a quote on line from Comfort for my California Beach but it was more than I already pay.
also I had a follow up phone call and an email so give them a try they may be right for you.

Apologies for any confusion.

I've spoken to both Comfort and Safeguard today to get a quote for my Beach and it wasn't great.

Safeguard - told that they couldn't quote me on my Beach and had to pass me through to Scenic who wouldn't do the 12 months for 10 offer and that because I want protected no claims bonus and Class 1 business use the best they could offer me was £1200!

Comfort - really nice chap but the quote I got online wasn't valid despite my having stated that it was a California Beach and that the V5 shows it as a 'motor caravan'. They could only offer me another policy which offerred considerably less cover:
Limit of 10,000 miles for Beach vs. unlimited for Ocean
Limit of 90 days eEuropeancover per year for Beach vs all year on the Ocean
£1000 limit for personal belongings for Beach vs £5000 personal belongings for Ocean
Costs slightly more as well - £464.50 once he'd added the 5% discount vs £436 not including the discount :0(

Impression so far is that the insurance partners are only any good if you have a California Ocean/SE - if you have a Beach then look elsewhere :0(

Detritus,
try Adrian Flux 0800 0890035 they know what a California Beach is and matched a very good quote that I got from Scenic the will also offer protected no claims bonus but I am not sure about Class 1 business
worth a phone call.
I also got a quote from the NFU who I have dealt with for a lot of years with my other vehicles.
slightly more expensive than the average insurance company but are a pleasure to deal with so they are worth the extra.
But the lady at the end of the phone could not believe the quote of £2000 that was offered on my beach.
she said it was the highest she had ever had and no way would she ask me to even consider it.
at that price it would have been back to the trail bike and the tent and the California would be up on bricks in the drive way.

Have been with Safeguard for a couple of years and just renewed with them. No idea what discounts we did or didn't get, and not (quite) the cheapest, but very helpful on the phone and they were OK amending the cover to more or less exactly what we wanted.

We recently changed to Safeguard as we found the Comfortz policy very basic, as you say Safeguard are not the cheapest but it is a very good policy and it is nice to know that they know what the California is, they also get very good reviews on the motorhome/carvan forums. Very happy so far.
