Parking at Gatwick

If you’re using your Cali I’d check if you need to pay for 2 spaces (due to length of the van being too long to fit in one space).
Also check your insurance. I’m with Comfort and you need their permission to leave the campervan unattended for more than 48 hours.
Both of these things meant we left the van at home last time!

As Borris says long stay you park yourself and catch bus to terminal. If you book it online in advance it much cheaper. The other main one is APH who have just moved to a new site closer to Gatwick. They like all other off-site stack the cars so you leave your keys and they park it.

I have had less than wonderful experiences of giving my car key to these sort of parking companies, presumably some are careful and you won't come back to dent central.

My California fits into one parking space, no problem. I’ve not yet come across any standard parking space it doesn’t fit into.
As far as Comfort and their 48hr rule. Can’t be bothered with that.

Any decent nearby car parks for a weeks parking?
We used Gatwick premium parking, extra wide spaces and you walk straight into north terminal from car park number 5 multi storey £130 ish for 5 days. I did not see height, we were in a discovery with plenty of clearance.

Ok, maybe not for the purist, but some hotels offer a package of 1 nights stay + upto 14 days free car parking + a shuttle bus to the terminal. It can be very cost effective.

North Terminal car park 6 has high head room (2.1m). If you drive up to the top floor, I've found far from full, so better chance of not having to 'squeeze in'. Regarding length, its no longer or wider than a large car, so fits into most conventional parking spaces. Still, I prefer to park on the end rather than squeeze between two other cars.

I have just booked a holiday leaving from Gatwick and was going to use the long stay parking.
The problem is that there are new restrictions for vans and camper vans. Basically you cannot park in any on site car parks. If you are caught it is a £25 a day fine.
Anything over 4.8m is now not allowed. Also interestingly the website states the VW Transporter, VW Caravelle and VW Caddy are specifically mentioned as not being allowed.

Tudor Rose off site meet and greet has been excellent every time I have used it

I parked at Easter without a problem, but I checked before and if i felt i couldn't fit in a spot by the fence they would have booked me into the car park where coaches go at the same cost. I suggest calling them to get the same advice

This is a bummer.
Can you share a link to new rules?
How have you got around them?

We used official Gatwick long stay a couple of times. There were no restrictions on length or campers at the time. Can’t comment on that.

If you have an early flight, option to hotels or local campsites is The Cat Inn, West Hoathly.

Great pub, great food, they let you sleep in your Cali in the car park. 20 mins to long stay, but the village is pretty ang very peaceful.

Added bonus, coffee/tea in the van is cheaper and way better than most airport offerings.

Here is another link
The parking restrictions are under the small print
The restrictions shown on the official app look the same as were in place last December when I had no problems on the South Terminal car park. The spaces are tight but doable, no height barrier. Just remember to remove the bike rack.
I just tried a dummy booking and it didn’t query my van when I put the reg in even though it came up as a Cali.
The Purple Parking link is just that, it isn’t (as far as I can see) anything to with the official parking lots, so I am not too worried.
Even so, I might just get the train at Reading and chill, there is little cost difference.
Ta for the heads up.

The medium stay car parks has bigger spaces 2.5m x 4.9m so that might work.

Here is one of the links
Where exactly does it say?

I can only see this:
"Our Long Stay car parks do not have a height restriction, but please note that trailers are not permitted."
And there's no mention about vans or campers here: https://www.gatwickairport.com/terms-and-conditions.html

Purple parking definitely has restrictions, at Heathrow too, but I never used them anyway.

The Cali is 4.8m - the same length as a standard 2.4 x 4.8 UK parking bay. This is one of it's many benefits as a daily drive, so unsure why you would say this?

Indeed. We did this at Manchester recently due to the new terminal works. The Marriot hotel the night before was great and they even arranged a taxi for the early hours return flight too!

Last summer we used Gatwick Holiday Parking. We chose Long Stay South which is outdoors so no height restrictions. There was no issues with it being a California. You drop off your car and keys at reception and it is ready for you when you return. There is a free shuttle bus. No issues at all. We took photos of the Cali before just in case, but we do that with any valet style parking.

The T6 is 4.9m long

I know this because I got a parking fine in a Dorset beach car park where the maximum length for a vehicle is 4.8m

Wow. just 5 cms either side of the lines resulted in a parking ticket? That's frankly disgusting. No wonder parking wardens are reviled.

...so all of the Range Rovers, Discoveries, Jaguars, Omodas, Defenders and cars that exceed 4800mm would also be ticketed then?
