Just doing some very forward planning for a short trip next year - late July 2017. We have to get ourselves to the Langres/Besançon area (yes I know, tough gig) so we'll Cali it down there from Calais a few days in advance - thought about going via the Vosges as we've never been there.

Interested in any nice rural campsites in Vosges area, also any memorable roads, sights? Anything really to get ideas. Thanks!

Strasbourg and Colmar are both fine old towns with excellent eating but I can't advise on camping as I've only been in the national park for skiing. I can imagine it's beautiful in summer.

This may or may not be your thing...

Possible campsite...

There is a rural aire south of the mountain range at Chavannes-sur-l'Étang - Aire (47.63301, 7.01843) equipped with EHU, WC, wifi, fresh water & waste disposal with a boulangerie just up the road (300m). Parking costs about €8 per night. Supermarket for supplies on the outskirts of Belfort as you head SW towards Besançon.

Many thanks Alibee and Rod.

We may visit the concentration camp. (Although without planning to, we seem to have been 'collecting' sites of atrocities somehow on our various travels in the past year or so - Schindler museum in Krakow, Auschwitz, Budapest 'House of Terror', and the Tuol Sleng genocide prison in Phnom Penh. But I'm glad to have seen every one of them).

[EDIT[ Sorry, the above sounds a bit pious, which wasn't my intention! :(

Went to the Vosges in 2015 and stayed here: http://domainedelongemer.xonrupt.fr/gb-welcome/
Its a municipal site but has plenty of space with both shaded and open pitches. The site is not quite on the lake but its just a walk over the park to get to the water. The site has sit on kayaks that you can borrow (for free).
We did lots of cycling (road), walking and swimming as outdoor activities. Enjoyed it very much and would go back again.
