Clearly a lot of views with different takes on the two scenarios, I've a 5.1 180 and we (me & OH) have often looked at upgrading, but in essence the insides of the California hasn't changed drastically over the models. Yes a door style may be different, a couple of more conveniences with lights or USBs etc but the bed and kitchen are in the same place and all the general features are there. Granted the engines have upped the euro compliance so that may be important to you.
The t5.1 140 was a sought after engine and saves £15k plus any wiggle room, so I'd get that one and budget £1k on accessories (they mount up) and have £14k for creating memories in the van. And it may depreciate slightly less?
