Aren't they to tie the awning down in the wind? Personally, we don't deploy the awning in the wind - potential damage to the awning and/or the vehicle isn't worth it to me.

No, but the club shop does sell the Thule straps to keep the awning in place, and we’ve thoroughly tested it, and it works !
