Apple Car Play - music disconnecting via cable

Hi all - I have an issue with playing music in my 6.1:
When using apple CarPlay wirelessly the music plays fine (Spotify & Amazon), but when the connection is wired music plays for about 3 seconds and pauses. pressing of 'play' just repeats the issue.

I don't think it's the cable (have changed the cable twice), so any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Make sure it’s a genuine apple cable if it’s an older phone. Apple will often introduce steps to stop non certified cables from working properly, will often happen after an apple software update.

(Newer usb-c iphones shouldn’t have any issue)
