We are planning a trip to Austria in August with the kids but struggling to find a campsite that meets our needs. Ideally we want to be on a swimming lake with cycling trails but is close to access to the mountains for chairlifts, gondolas, toboggan runs, hiking, zip wires etc etc. Ideally we would like to park the van up and not move it for our stay, so good public transport would be a plus. Anyone got any good experience / ideas they could share, please?

Also, whilst I am here, we are stopping at Europa Park on the way down for a few days and plan to camp there. I understand you can't book so has anyone got any experience of the queues for the camping and any tips, please? For example best time of day to arrive.

Thank you!

I stayed here for a week:

Also another campsite on the lake which looked equally good.

I was taking part in a triathlon and the swim part was in the lake. Water almost drinking quality apparently.
Supermarket within easy walking distance from the campsite and there is a short path round the lake (run was 4x round the lake). Lovely quiet roads for cycling on (apart from race day!) I didn't have my MTB with me so not sure of the trails.

For the 2nd week of the holiday we moved to Westerndorf which had easy access to the ski lifts so did some hiking & walking. This week was in an apartment so cant comment on the campsite other than there is one there:

Stayed at zell am see cant remember name of campsite but gd for swimming and close to mountains.

Austria has got plenty campsite nearby all the things you look for.
Every valley has great campsites

We went to Langenfeld in the Otztall few years ago and stayed here....

2minute walk from the campsite to the spa/thermen...

2mim walk to open air public swimmingpool

Cali stayed on campsite ten days , shops and supermarket 10min walk
Public transport (bus to Solden and higher up) 5 min walk
Walk from the campsite direct up in to the mountains.
Great campsite with every facility you need
Also they had a good pizza restaurant at the campsite

Thanks all for the replies, really appreciated. Now I have got something to go on as I was going round in circles - I like the look of them all. Cheers!

Not Austria but: Grindelwald in Switzerland has a good network of chairlifts / cable cars / railways, good cycling opportunities, lakes only a 20 minute drive away, a swimming pool, ice rink, and crazy golf. Camping Eigernordwand is only perhaps 500 metres from the station and you can sip a beer in the evening while watching the sun set on the Eiger!

Thanks Richard - I know where you are coming from as we've done Switzerland and stayed in the next valley in Lauterbunnen. However CH is so eye-wateringly expensive now that we want to have a crack at Austria instead as well as go somewhere different.
