I like to think I’m pretty careful about insurance, I worked in the business long enough years ago. Renewal came up and due to large increase thought I’d look around. Got a quote from Aviva - they asked for the vehicle reg. year of make and value. This was all done online, and like all other online quotes they use the reg. number to get vehicle details from dvla database I assume. My V5 states body type Motor Caravan. Got a good (but only slightly cheaper) quote from them and decided to go ahead. Luckily I did all this in advance of the renewal date, checking through the Schedule they have my VW T6 California Ocean as an estate car. I query this and was told they don’t insure camper vans and “I didn’t tell them it was a campervan” . Well no but …….. I definitely didn’t state it was an estate car, where that came from I have no idea.

Fairly sure my outgoing policy was Aviva via Comfort, but yes it's always a risk when doing an "online only" quote through mainstream insurers' front end systems.

Comfort insurance is from Aviva.

Yes that’s the weird thing as RockinNRollin said Comfort will quote and put you with Aviva. Still I worry about how many other people got a quote online and ended up with Aviva direct and aren’t properly (if at all) insured.

Insurers "appear" to have specialist departments not accessible via the online quote pages; e.g. with LV, pretty sure you have to ring them even though for cars you can easily quote online (and yes, it'll let you quote online for a Cali but it will be "normal car insurance").

There is a section on the Aviva homepage that is specific to campervans. Link through there and it tells you they have partnered with Comfort for specialist insurance and then takes you through to the Comfort website for a quote. All pretty clear and accessible.

I think my problem occurred because I went via one of those price comparison sites - so I wouldn’t have seen that link.

As most people will to be fair, at least until you have a "network" of specialist insurers you want to try.

Wouldn't worry too much about it. More an Aviva issue. I came across it quite a few years ago when they were chasing me for more vehicles on my Aviva multi car policy..... I gave them the reg and they said they didn't insure campervans.

I then told them that they did via a 3rd party broker.

I was with Aviva before I bought the campervan. As they wouldn’t insure the Cali, they suggested Comfort. I was put off by Comfort as I couldn’t protect NCD.

I'm with Comfort which is you say is Aviva but you can insure direct with them via the phone and their specialist department. Mine is £535 with Comfort but it's going to be fun next May as my son now works for Aviva as a compliacne officer. He's told me get's 40% off all their insurance policies also for immediate family so we'll see what happens then. He did tell me to cancel my existing but TBH I simply don't want the hassle of that.....
