Is the VW bike rack painted silver or is it ‘raw’ aluminium?

I have a few light scratches in the bike rack and wondering whether these can be removed with some wet and dry paper - if raw aluminium, then scratches should rub out easily

Actually its anodised, if you sand it, it will expose untreated aluminium which will then being to corrode(tarnish).

I have just reversed into a lamp post and damaged my T5 bike rack. See attached. Can I get spares for this? or do I need to buy the whole rack? If so, can you still buy these racks? or does anyone have one for sale? Man thanks.

From VW's statements to us when we had damage on ours, its a full replace jobbie. Our problem was one of the pins had come out - and they couldnt even replace the pin. I think the reason is that the rack is a Thule product and VW dont do spares for third party items. But thats assumption on my part.

It seems one can buy them new at an astronomic price. If I have to do that I guess it's an insurance job.

Could you brace it - drill two holds either side of the crack and bolt a ~6 inch plate across the crack, on either side of the bar - like they have just done with my collarbone . Guess depends on how heavy/many bikes you tend to carry as to how safe a repair feels, but should be ok and keep you going until you can find a broken one on eBay to cannibalise

Get a replacement. Impossible tell if you have stressed the rest of the frame. No one wants to be confronted with 4 bikes landing in front of them on the motorway.

Usually a few 2nd hand ones up for sale on Ebay / Facebook. We paid £150 a few months ago.

Embarrassingly, I have a brand new one for sale in the marketplace on here. It was for my new T6.1, but I know it fits a T6 too. However, I’ve no idea if it fits on a T5. Someone will be able to say…
