What do you use for boiling water in &/or outside your Cali?

A standard camping whistling kettle for using on gas, usually on a simple camping stove. Mostly by my hubby who likes just to click the gas on. I though have a thing for fire so only use the gas stove when we can’t light a fire (stopovers or some campsites). Stores easily with the handle down in the bench seat drawer). 4145C8C2-1E06-4541-9437-5CDD6D83ECFE.jpeg

My storm (Kellie) kettle over the fire container (different fuels, usually what’s been foraged for free) or with an adapter over the charcoal in my Cobb oven/grill (great for getting a kettle boiling whilst accelerating the charcoal startup).

My pathfinder water bottle in my firebox stove with the bottle plate (again different fuels). Kellie kettle for washing, smaller bottle for 2 cups of tea.

Have been looking for a kettle to go over my Roadii fire/tripod, but the only ones I’ve seen and really liked are either too big or cast iron and too heavy. So bought a zebra 16 inch billy can with metal lid clips at the Bushcraft Show (metal clips only available in UK from the Bushcraft store). It’ll also sit on gas, under the lid of my Cobb or on my firebox, and can be used to cook in, so very versatile.

Domestic electric kettle if we have the luxury of hookup, but that’s not very often and usually only on sites when fire isn’t allowed.

If on hook up is there a limit of 2500 watts on the three pin socket? I am sure I have read this somewhere.

We use a camping electric kettle only 1200 watts, obviously slower but when on holiday whats the rush, the collapsible kettle is great when off grid.

We're in the slow lane.........
When on hook up - 600w kettle......

We have a ketlle for use on the gas hob and carry a 1000w electric 1liter boiler for use on hook-up.
TIP: fill up your ketlle when going to bed and place it on the floor in front of the aux-heater outlet when in use or somewhere else in the Cali . So the water has allready a slightly higher themp. in the morning , place it on the hob when waking up and instant hot water for thee/coffee .
2nd TIP : always boil some more water then needed for your thee/coffee so you have hot water ready to wash up afterwarts when not on a campsite ;)

We put “spare” boiled water in a Thermos 1.2 litre king stainless steel flask. The water stays really hot for 24 hours and cools really slowly. Very impressive.

Generally a kettle , if we are on a hook up we have a small Nespresso machine as well.

Yes the kettle works well and can be used for cooking, e.g. soups, stews, etc, plus it’s designed so that it can store the stove within it!

Picture of our gas hob kettle and electric kettle. Gas hob kettle is at least 35 years old, electric one is 3yrs old and is 1000w, capacity 1 litre. I said in earlier 1700w, my mistake
Red is gas
black is electric

I use a very old red camping kettle on the gas ring in the Cali. Many people have commented that my kettle is really much too old and tatty for my lovely van, and the wrong colour (black van, purple accessories) and I've lost the whistle which makes it less efficient but it has a major plus - it fits in the bowl in the sink with the lid down, so it's always handy when I stop for a brew. When I can find another kettle that fits, I may get a new one.

We use the Outwell Collapsible kettle.

I would naturally have tended towards something more solid and made of metal and was a bit sceptical about how long it would last being collapsed/expanded repeatedly but after 2 years it shows no signs of any deterioration and we are more than happy with it.

It also fits neatly into the sink when collapsed for easy storage.

And it’s available in a range of colours!

That's excellent news! I shall buy a purple one immediately!

Function over form every time for me. What does it matter if it’s old or tatty? If it does the job, BG, that’s great. :)
