Brakes grinding noise

Just noticed the rear passenger wheel is covered in orange dust after an hour journey yesterday. Not sure that’s good news - only rusted disc ? - or not…?
I had the same on a Jaguar, it was metal on metal which only made a noise below 10mph. Trusted the dealer to check the pads would make it to the next service but they didn’t. New rear discs and pads and damaged powder coat on the wheel due to hot embedded steel particles, not happy.

The OP - me - said the noise started at the end of our summer holiday. Literally the last hour. The day before we had driven from Ile de Ré to Normandy and then that day Normandy to London.
The vehicle hadn’t been left sat. Over 2 weeks it had done 1000 miles plus.

I think it’s more likely wear than rust.

Whatever the problem may or may not be, I find it incredible that anyone would ignore a noise from the brakes or possibly the wheel without getting checked out by SOMEONE!

Just took this off my bmw. Noise sounded like a wheel bearing going. The rust had got behind the braking surface causing it delamination. The pads amazingly were fine. It is wise to check out unusual noise from wheels and brakes ASAP. A faint grinding noise won't probably do much harm if its just worn pads

I’ve seen boat anchors in better state than that :mute:mute

Van booked in at my trusted VW specialist next friday to eventually find out why the brakes are grinding.

As usually unused all winter, I was tempted to leave it (and the cost) until after Christmas but was worried I would then forget again.

New Pagid pads and discs on the back. £428 incl VAT.
“Metal to metal. You got your money’s worth out of those.”
15 years old, 60k miles, pretty good. And glad it’s now safe. (Fronts still on 2008 parts!)

So what happened to the warning light that must’ve come on about 6months ago?

No light. Did 2008 SE have them?
I was now assuming the grinding was an old school audio warning. I think somebody mentioned earlier in thread.
The mechanic showed me the pad. He said the grinding bit broke apart and fell off. There was barely anything left.

I recently replaced rear disc & pads as picked up as being down to 25% on last service and would need replacing at next service.
Anyhow
Inner pads were well below the outer visible pads.
One pad was breaking up and the other was almost to the metal.
The pad with the sensor was well below sensor wear point but I'd never had any warnings.
Might be due to rusty disc but obviously it isn't safe to rely on the pad wear sensors giving a warning.

This is such an easy fix with basic mechanical knowledge and tools. Takes about Half a day if you take half hourly tea breaks.
Cost £127 for Bosch pads and discs.
And while you are at it replace the ABS sensors at the same time for less than £15.

I would be petrified just jacking it up!

The other thread on PD engines reminded me of the time I changed the oil on my Fiat Uno at university. I put too much in. Damage was so bad, I had to sell the car!

I do a fair bit but no good with the oily stuff.
