Some people crate their children too. I think it’s an excellent idea!

Crating dogs overnight is quite natural for the dog. At home Meg sleeps in a crate with the door removed.

LOL yeah now crating kids is different With dogs overnight is fine, it’s their bed for some, but Owners and breeders who crate throughout the day because they have too many and some may fight shouldn’t have dogs. If they don’t get on, find a good home rather than crating for long periods. It’s wrong!
 
Beware of judging things you obviously don't understand. It is natural for dogs to sleep for large portions of the day..... like us they have their favourite spots....seats etc. The crate is often a used as their bed and is loved as a safe comfortable spot which accompanies them on their travels. There is no problem with them being in crates for large portions of time as long as they do get physical exercise, mental stimulation, human contact and obviously toilet breaks.
Most of the top trainers and behaviourists now advise their use to give dogs a reliable safe space.
So bear in mind crates are not a bad idea just some people use them incorrectly, and some people just don't understand how they are being used.

I dont get why people have pets and then leave them chained up or in cages for half their lives. :( Very sad.
 
I agree with Collieboy that crates are quite comforting for many dogs, not necessarily cruel. Ours likes her crate BUT, being a spaniel, only if the crate is within about 3 metres of where we are. As a spaniel she realises her job description involves close tracking work... follow into the garden, back inside, very VERY close (breakfast toast), outside to garage, into the loo, dog bed in the study, kitchen for lunch, drop slobbery rubber ball in my lap at desk, get ignored, drop soggy ball in lap repeatedly until desired outcome, hose down after getting covered in filth, crate to dry off (Nooooooo!), sofa, kitchen for supper, sofa. But then she leaves us about 9.30pm to go upstairs to get the bed properly warm for us. Crate doesn't really come into it much most days.
 
I don't mean crates are by their nature cruel I just mean spending their entire life in them isn't very good. Our spaniel Rudy loves his cage which we got from the old owner, and when Honey hurt her back and had to be restricted for a few days, he got upset he couldnt go in there.

I certainly don't want you to think I think crates are cruel, just that in my view (and its only my view) they shouldnt be the place they spend the majority of their time. It's a little like us being restricted to the smallest room in the house. I think it would drive us bonkers.

Earlier this year ours had to be on crate rest for several weeks (cruciate ligament) AND wear the cone-of-shame. Very forlorn and bonkers spaniel.

Yes Wim, he’s a really good traveller and, like yours, he’s wonderful company. He definitely adds to the enjoyment of our trips and he’s no problem whatsoever. He also helps us to make friends wherever we go as he loves children. He has just been splashing in a glacial river- too cold for us but perfect for him.

I didn’t even think of that to be honest. Our current van goes back today, and a new one is on order which we are having lowered so will be interesting to see how it affects her.
