Heads up
Just found out after three years of insurance with the RAC they do not insure camper vans. Apparently they do not know that a California is a camper van. Only just found out when ringing for another quote on a new one.

This is hilarious - not for you I understand, but the nations oldest motoring organisation can’t tell the difference between a car and a campervan!! They’re both ‘automobiles’!

And they run VW assist!

Oh my goodness, however ‘Ignorance’ seems to be the UK Govt. excuse for all, so I guess it permeates all businesses.
Sounds like ‘no damage done’ in the 3 years and legally they would likely still be liable….. unless it’s in the small print !
I hope any other unsuspecting owners with RAC read this, you should maybe repost with a more ‘Warning’ Thread title.

AA came when VW Assist said that they'd send them as no VW Assist available at the time.
AA Guy who came said that he used work in Europe for the AA and they did VW Assist there?
Correct, AA have the VW Commercial Assist contract. We’ve had such poor service from RAC Breakdown that IF they ran the VW Assist programme we’d definitely sign up to say Green Flag. Zero confidence in RAC.

Well insurance renewal is approaching so thought I would do some checking after the shock of last years price and to my surprise it is still coming out at £1150 to £1395....This is with nothing added to the cover..What are you all finding price wise

Ha - I just rang them this morning about possible change to California. Currently have Golf R, 10+ no claims, quoted me over 4x current price. Said 'you may want to look elsewhere' :)

Hi! Are you likely to be moving house soon?? If so and, if I were you I would start by getting new quotes for the likely area you are moving to.

Ours has just renewed, up £60 to £437 with Comfort. I looked at Caravan Club and one other, but both were more.

I had the issue of the Cali not being covered as a camper but as a car/mpv, you have to be really careful especially on comparison sites. I even went to VW for a quote and like your experience they didn’t know what a California was! I guess it’s white labelled in both cases and provided by a third party.

Make sure you check it covers sleeping, carrying and cooking on gas inside, having mains electricity etc. I went to a few known good providers and Comfort and defaulted to them as they knew what they were doing. Just got renewal and it’s around £50 more.

I have had good experiences with RAC.

I was bracing myself for bad news on the insurance front, after a big leap last year. Was pleasantly surprised to get a £100 drop in price from Admiral as a renewal quote.
