Camping is becoming expensive !

Definitely all about the variety. Do it your way.

ACSI gives good fixed price discounts out of July/August peak season

Now come on guys , i was just considering comming to the UK for a few weeks next year....Wales or Schotland....
Promote yourselves....:D

South coast, specifically the Jurassic Coast, Glastonbury area, Lake district, Cornwall, Peak District and West Coast of Scotland. You won't be disappointed.

I've never struggled to get a site and I've always booked on the day and never had minimum stays inflicted on me. You can get very basic sites for about £8-10 a night and pay more for more mod cons on the more specialised camping sites.

Will look in those tips....TKX Matt:thumb
Chances are we will be at least 2 weeks off to the UK arround june?

June is good (as is September) because its before school summer holidays so you will find everywhere quieter with less children. July to Aug can be very very busy in some places.

Try North Wales. Take the ferry to Hull, the straight down the m62 over the Pennines (hills to us, mountains to you!). Quick skirt around Manchester on the m60 the down the m56 to Wales.
Lovely drives across the moors, lots of mountains, sea sides, wildlife.
Start at Rhos on Sea, drive down to Llandudno, the great orm, Conway. Don't miss out Bangor pier, Over the Menai bridge to Anglesey. Start at Beaumaris the work your way around anti clockwise. Head to Caernafon, then follow the syeam train line over Rhydd ddu to Beddgelert. Pop up to Penypass for a look at the mountains of Snowdonia. Back down to Porthmadog then down to Harlech.
Bliss!
Croeso y Cymru, boyo!

Gonna check it out but we try as short as poss. on the ferry for our doggy...

I've just put our local pub on Britstops... Fintry Inn just 15 miles north of central Glasgow, but very rural and has its own microbrewery. A good location for heading into either Glasgow or Edinburgh... either driving or taking the train the last few miles to avoid the horror of traffic wardens (major source of employment in Edinburgh!).

Seeing as we use ours as a Daily Driver, NOT just for High Days and Holidays, you will occasionally find us in the car park of a Hotel. Royal Lancaster in London, The Scarlet in North Cornwall and other places, plus Crystal Palace CC in London, Rutland Water Campsites as well as Certified Locations and the occasional Lay-by. The California can go anywhere and mix it with the best of them.:thumb

You have good taste in hotels Welshgas. I stayed at the Scarlet for 4 nights in November, great hotel and would use it again.
Shock, horror I didn't camp...!!!
Well the wife was 7 months pregnant and she flat out refused to sleep in the van at that stage.

However when we are travelling over in Europe we never pre- book because we have no idea where we will end up. Quite often we have stayed in a hotel, simply because it was more convienent than camping. Not every location has a local campsite and sometimes it's nice to have a room with a shower and toilet.

The California gives you the freedom to decide when you arrive:bananadance

I have just been booking a few days over Easter and some of the prices are now bordering a hotel room, I prefer small sites with few facilities but I am noticing more and more campsites are now even increasing their prices or putting statics on touring pitches.

Four of my regulars haunts over the past five years have now changed to just static caravans which is such a shame as it is making the sites that offer touring pitches much more in demand.

It is very sad that camping is not what it was ten years ago :(

Some of the big sites are very expensive, but there are still plenty of smaller sites with less mod cons. We've used a lot of the affiliated sites with the Camping and Caravan Club and usually pay £10 or under, best of all most are only allowed 4-6 motorhomes or caravans so theyre often quiet too. Most we ever paid was £34 at Golden Cap and that was with a sea view at the front of the site which had all the mod cons. We balked at it but we paid it anyway and it did have a hard standing. :)

We also found places like Monkton Wylde very cheap at about £13 a night as members, and it was beautiful with great facilities.

We haven't renewed CCC this year simply because we didnt get away enough last year.

No a penny more -still the most I have paid is £27.50 In 2016 I will not pay more than £30 this year per night more than that and my money will be off to another site. +1 for those small sites.

Worth it for the short stroll to a great pub.
So great, it's name escapes me!
Pod.

We always try to go small as there's a better chance of being allowed pyrotechnics.

It seems to me there are two types of Cali punter here.
Those that see it for what it is, a cool, go anywhere anytime flexible bus and those that see it as a small caravan and always seek out comfortable sites with all mod cons.

I know which camp (no pun intended ) I'm in.

As for parking the Cali in the hotel car park - WTF?

S.
Im a bit of both- i like to park in front of the hotel and slip in for a shower - best of both worlds ...... in the UK the average age of a california owner is n n n n n n n ninety

Never go on trips on bank hollidays....;)
We leave the 6th april to France....nice and quite...
Easter is the first weekend open for many campsitses the regular guests all come to check on thier caravan after winter or pulling it from the storage to camping.
Kids everywhere ....:headbang

You must have been born a grown up :D. Not everyone is fortunate enough to take their breaks whenever they like. Like package holidays, site prices unfortunately shoot up with demand too. :(

At least i can chose my holliday , so call me lucky;)
As for born grown up.....nearly 43 and still not grown up!
We tend to keep away from busy campsites and like to travel in low season.

This is a great campsite, such a shame they have put in planning to change the touring area to statics !

We are also finding campsites very discriminatory because you have a camper van and not a tent & Car combo or a big white camper.

In particular we have to argue the case for having a family tent and campervan no different to an estate car and a family tent but we get charged for the tent as an awning. This is really getting out of hand as many others will have a car, family tent and event tent which they get charged as an awning. Yet we pay the same and have one less item taking up considerably less space.

One campsite said that because it was not attachable to the van they would charge us double once for a tent and once for a campervan.

I think sites need to change their pricing policy to be more reasonable and logical. I understand charging for space and number of people but California’s get charged more.
We are in the process of booking next years holiday and are finding pitch prices are increasing more than inflation. Problems we are finding

Many sites now ask for minimum stay ( as mentioned in other post) One I found asked for 7 nights minimum in July and August!!!

Sites are now charging for every extra they can think of, children, dogs, extra adults, pup tents, showers etc.. Surely it should be just a pitch fee?

A Campervan pays the same price as a huge caravan ( they also will have a car with them)

A lot of touring sites you now have to share with the ever growing amount of statics which I think ruin a campsite making it look like Butlins.

Some sites we were looking to book are approaching £60-70 per night, this is now getting Into hotel/b&b territory.

I realise you can still find a few small sites for £20 per night or use a britstop but the majority of the good sites are now charging these stupid fees which make camping very expensive.

Because of this we are now going to do 50/50 spilt hotel and campsites. At least a hotel you can stay for one night and you get breakfast included.
are

We always said if we ran a campsite we would do C&B, camp and breakfast :)
