Can I wind the awing arms in without the canopy on?!

I bought a T6 recently, the wind out awning was in poor condition so I've cleaned it but as it dried it split down the seam close to the vehicle and is now on the grass.... I've tried to wind the mechanism back in, without the fabric on but it isn't moving, any advice on bow to get it to fold away would be much appreciated. Thank you!

It's the fabric that is wound in, not the arms. You'll have to push it in and secure with some rope/ ties front and rear until fabric replaced.
