Carista Scanner Difference

Hi all,
I've sat here and read through stacks of (enlightening) threads on the Carista.
At the moment, I just want to get the Scandinavian (Rear) DRL active. I've had front and rear DRLs on last two cars and cna never understand why only fronts are chosen.
There's a few other little things that look interesting... Blink turn signals when done closing windows via remote, Daytime running lights on only when switch is set to AUTO, Coming-home lights mode set to AUTO when it's dark, Lane-change turn signal auto-flasher count, Lane-change turn signal auto-flasher count to 5flashes

Okay, maybe there's more that I want than I thought.

Couple of questions if I may:
I'm struggling to work out the difference in the scanners used - but clearly the more expensive and better looking one does a bit more.
Anybody got any ideas or experience? Both on offer on Amazon at the moment.
Is this something a local garage would have, and could do in an hour for £30:00 rather than me buy one for a one time use?

Thanks in advance

Please Note : Carista no longer offer a Free trail of there scanners

It is Subscription Only, even to read codes - Buyer Beware !

I posted some of the tweaks I did there: https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/thread...ces-of-the-t6-1-california.56587/#post-732592

There is no difference between the original Carista scanner and the new more expensive Carista Evo scanner for the VW Transporter. The new Evo scanner works with additional car brands that aren’t supported by the orignal one. But for what you want to do, there’s no difference.

Having the scanner is useful beyond the one-off setting tweak. If you ever get an orange check engine light, you can plug your scanner and find out what the issue is without having to go to a mechanic. Not essential but handy.

Thanks for the heads up.
To be fair, I wasn't expecting a free trial even though I'd read about it... nothing advertised on their site about it so was just going to get a scanner, pay for a month, then cancel after I have tweaked. I wouldn't go messing too much with error codes myself, I have a local guy for that.

Thanks... yes, I have bookmarked that page for future help.

Perfect, I may just save £20 quid and get the cheaper one then.
I'm not great when it comes to car mechanics, but I guess that side of it may come in handy (although I hope don't get any faults) and my local garage would deal with it anyway - still, I guess forewarned is forearmed. At least I know if it sounds expensive.

Now I've just got to persuade her indoors that £45 is worth it for having the rear lights on

Not quit correct. VW are introducing new security features and only the new, more expensive Carista module can work with these features . eg: the older cheaper module will not allow any changes on the Multivan, you need the new module to make such changes.

So the cheaper (older) model is £27, the newer one £45... do you think I need to spend the extra 20 quid in order for it to work fully on the T6.1?

Maybe I should see if anyone close to me has one and just pay them to do it.
Its a shame they don't rent them out for a month - reckon they'd make more money that way than full sales.

I may have just answered my question....
The cheaper one has an asterisk next to the VW Logo that says "Compatible with VW group cars made until 2020"

That said, the newer one ALSO has an asterisk that says "Compatible with VW group cars made until 2023"

Anyone used one on a 2024 California?

Sure but we’re talking about a T6.1 here. Happy to be corrected here but I don’t believe that there’s anything different between the original reader and the Evo for the T6.1 transporter.

I use this one.
Had an old Carista which worked fine but wasn’t compatible with my new car. Scandinavian lights are one of the options available for my cupra, don’t know if available for a T6.1

Just pointing out that the old Carista is the end of the line as is the T6.1 Transporter/California.
For the New Transporter/Multivan California you will need the Evo Carista. So if you plan on upgrading to the new models in the future you might want get the Evo which will do the T6.1 + the new models.

I did look at this one but found the plans/credits confusing and the description of what it did wasn't as clear as the Carista

Well I bit the bullet and got the newer version for £45 on Amazon - I could have saved £20 but I've gone halves with a fried who wants to customise his Polo too so made sense.

Now just got to work out where it goes.

Bottom R of Dashboard.

I’ve used both and I didn’t notice any difference in fact I sent the new version back. I also know you can’t make the dial needles sweep on start up or do a forced dpf regen.

So I could have saved £20 for what I want to do then... oh well. Its Amazon, it can always go back once I've done what I need... ;)

thinking out loud, so to speak, but have you tried adjusting your country on the in car set up? Different options become visable. I only say this because the digital kmph drove me mad on our T6. The main dealer leapt to VW’s defence saying it was eminently useful have this in the UK. Eventually someone kindly assisted by advising me to tell the ‘Van it was in Australia. The option to switch to mph became visible, and switch it off completely I think. Slightly bizarre as everything’s in Kilometres in Oz, but that’s by the by.
Fingers crossed that you get it sorted out. I’ll check and see if ours are on as standard. Thought they were, so it’s a good shout, thank you.

I hadn't even thought of that...
That'll be a fun exercise to find - we all know how intuitive the VW system as after all
Could be a good shout though - if it thinks its in Sweden it might just put the rear lights on DRL - who knows - although I'm not sure what else it might change. I certaily don't want KmPH

I mean if I get them on without a hassle and paying £60 then all the other nice to haves could be lived without I guess.
