Hi
Does anyone charge a iPad from the socket behind the passenger seat?

Yes - are you talking 12v? - you will need a 2.1a USB adapter. I use one made by tomtom.

I'm pretty sure that my HTC 12v car adapter worked perfectly with my iPod. I can't test as Cali is at sea enroute to NZ.

Belkin do a range of adapters and I have one that charges my iPad/iPod from a standard 12v socket.

I use one of the other 12v sockets for charging the I Pad. The one by the side door/bench seat is my favourite one for charging when camped up.

I find the two pin plug 230v behinf the passenger seat (inverter?) erratic. I have a three pin socket adaptor which works perfectly well with some gadgets, eg. Bose soundlink, but will not charge my laptop!

When camping we use the inverter, Imade up an adapter with a a French 2 pin plug, a bit of wire and a 3 pin UK socket and ths takes the iPhone and iPad chargers fine. We had no trouble so far with it being erratic (like Grannyjen) but we'll see!

If you use the cigar lighters instead it will give you more flexibility.

Like redredzimmer said, newer Apple devices are fussy about the current that is coming out of the 12V adapter. You have to have a 2A one rather than the usual 500mA one - the effect of a wrong charger being that you plug it in and it thinks about it for a second and then fails to charge. I'm sure there are valid technical reasons beyond Apple forcing people to buy their or their licensees accessories.

Interesting reply above.

Could that explain why I the magsafe charger for my macbook will not charge from the 2pin-3pin inverter adaptor that I use whilst everything else works happily from that adaptor?

I am a totally stupid numbskull when it comes to anything using the wonders of electricity and worry about these things

The only 12v that appears to charge my iPad is the one installed on top the dash. No other 12v sockets in the van seem to charge it.

Apple is fussy about voltage going into it's products. It's why you have different charges for different macbooks.

Thanks to all for your information.
My beech will arrive soon and I just want to get everything ready. I will post some pics when he arrives!!

I use the inverter socket, with a Euro to figure 8 mains cable, such as one of these: http://www.cabling4less.co.uk/category. ... s=PW-24702 which can be directly connected to an Apple charger if you pull the 3 pin section off. Also useful for camera chargers and anything else that takes a figure 8 connection.

I thought was a brilliant way of doing it Pineweasl. Then I found It works for the iPad but the my iPhone uses a charger in the back of the 3 pin plug so I still need to take the 3 pin socket attached to the inverter. Two different levels of charging I think, but it is a pity that Apple haven't been consistent with the connections for their charging systems for their devices.

You can safely charge your iPhone using the iPad charger - the only difference is that the iPad charger can deliver 2 A and the iPhone charger only 1 A. You can charge an iPad with the iPhone charger - but it takes forever. If you charge the iPhone with the iPad charger it will not "overcharge" the iPhone - the iPhone will only take a safe charge.
