Clean water spills from the filler neck

Does anyone have problems with water spilling from the filler neck? I've seen that the seal and the neck seem to be ok and well closed, however it spills and it doesn't need to be very full.

We usually fill our tank to the brim and I have never noticed any leakage once the cap is fitted. Even after a drive.

I did wonder if there was a one way valve in the cap to allow air in as water is drawn off and perhaps the valve in your cap had failed.

When I looked at our cap, there is a small hole in the centre on the inside, but I can't draw air through it or blow through it, so I'm not sure what purpose that serves.

If your van is still under warranty and a dealer is close by, I would take it in and ask for a replacement cap. Or ask if you can borrow one of a van in stock to see if it is the cap that is at fault.

New ones are available in the club shop but at £36.95 it's an expensive replacement if it turns out not so solve the problem!!!

Mine spills too, dribbles really. Leaves marks on the van sometimes.

Plese don't take offence but are you pressing the cap firmly inwards against its spring before twisting it and locking in place?

The cap that comes as standard doesn’t have a breather hole. I know because my water tank creates a vacuum when water is drawn off, a problem yet to be permanently resolved. It is possible to buy caps with a breather and that is what I use at the moment.

For the OP, never had an issue.

For the above there is a whole thread (that you may be part of) that I recall discussing the issue. I believe the end result was there is a one way valve in the cap.

I’ve tried swapping the cap from another Cali and it didn’t make any difference, so I doubt it’s cap related. I’ve looked at a thread on here but I didn’t see any solution to the issue other than fit a cap with a valve, which has solved the problem for the moment. I think the original Cali cap has grease inside it so it’s not a good idea to drill out the small indent at the centre of the cap.

Thanks, yes I had seen it and just read through again. It’s a bit of a mystery, there clearly has to be ventilation as most seem to have non venting caps and experience no problems. When I asked the technician at my dealer first thing he did was look on this site! He wants the car for a day to investigate but now I’ve bought a vented cap the pressure for getting it fixed is off.

Yeah - it's a bizzare one. I was musing over this yesterday and there must be a fix that is pretty simple once fault found properly. While drilling the lid or getting a vented lid fixes the problem, it's not really addressing the root cause which could still cause issues downstream. My money is in an issue with the vent hole or somewhere along its pipe caused by a common manufacturing error.
