As I've just ordered my Cali from the local stealer, I've also been on the look out for Insurance. On the plus side with California's they are on all the car insurance web sites like Go Compare and Compare the Meerkat. But I heard a few people suggesting Comfort (http://www.comfort-insurance.co.uk/), so I gave them a look. They stuffed the rest of the opposition for me. Worth a look if you're insuring.

They are specialist motorhomes insurance which helps. Plus all their cover seems to include European cover, and they had a default excess of just £200 which was one of the lowest I'd found as well.

Cheers
Blakey

i agree insured me for £230 full comp less than my fiesta
bargain i would say

Yes, mine was £200 less than my car and unlimited free Green Cards! With Direct Line they used to charge be every time I went to France.

Funnily enough i just did a quote with them last night, £225.
Not sure how they arrive at this quote without even knowing what van it is! Want to speak to someone about it first rather than doing it online just in case but their lines close at 6pm and i'm rarely home by then

Another Comfort customer here. £289 for my 2011 180DSG. I got quotes from others but were all much more than Comfort & some would not cover 'camping' equipment in the Cali !
Just hope if I have to claim that they are on the ball & do the work rather than leaving it to the customer as I have found with some of the cheap car insurers.
As a side note I nearly had the front N/S corner wiped out this morning. Some guy tried to create an extra lane on a roundabout.

i just paid £600 full comp with my calie .have told them about remap lowered 19inch wheels big brake forge fitted ,etc
footman james .and euro cover .we do about 11k a year in the van only used weekends .and remap to 220 bhp

Hi, does anyone know whether comfort are also competitive if you need to use the vehicle to travel to and from a place of work. Also, has anyone had any "claim" experience with them because this is the other important factor when considering insurance. Thanks, Mark.

Would this be business class 1?
Took out my policy with them yesterday and although there was some confusion i think this is included.
I will check my documents when they come through.

Travelling to & from ONE place of work is refered to as commuting & is normally included on insurance, it is not 'business class1'.
Business use or class 1 I believe is for use in conjunction with work, ie using vehicle during your working day for business purposes.
My comfort policy includes business use, so I can collect truck parts for our work vehicles & be covered whilst doing so.

Yes I found Comfort to be very competitive with commuting & business use at £286.

Got my documents through today and yes business use is included which is handy.

Did you ask for it specifically or is that part of their standard cover?

I didn't ask for business use but was included anyway. Some folk say they have not got it on their Comfort policy.

These prices are really hard to understand. When I run my 88bhp T4 camper worth £13k through the comfort website it quotes me £588! Compare this with £45k worth of 180bhp horsepower insured for less than £300 here.
Are you guys using the 'motorhome' section, or using the 'car' page?

I think I used the motor home site I was a bit confused to start with because it gave me a quote for £243 but didn't, know what van I had I rang them up the next day gave them the reg and engine size and value and that was it it stayed the same
Happy days

Dealt with them by phone.....SO they know it's a VW California.....another bonus is that Europe cover is for ALL EU countries and some others as standard. They will issue a Green Card for Turkey for about £20, but they are not interested in offering cover for any of the Balken countries, although Croatia is included in standard cover.......

No i didn't ask, it's included as standard.
Seem like an excellent outfit

I rang Comfort today to ask why I was getting a quote of £580 for my slow (SLOW) T4 which is worth less than a third of the price of a new Cali with 180hp, who seem to be getting quotes of £250. They say it is all down to my postcode. So Cali buyers beware, if your postcode is less than ideal, get your own quote rather than rely on these £250ish prices shown here from Comfort.

I'm not saying you won't get a good deal, just to check what you can get before you buy.

Wow that is nearly double what I'm paying. Bad postcode area, have you had this with other insurance ? Where do you live ?

We are on the edge of a rough-ish area in Greater Manchester but actually only a few miles from the Peak District National Park.
I can get £300 on a motorhome policy but things get tricky (and expensive) if I want Class 1 Business use. That's why I wanted to understand how the great prices discussed here were being obtained.

Just thought I'd add some info here.

We used Comfort for our previous MH and TOAD ( Defn- Car towed on a braked A frame BTW which is still currently insured with them) they generally have always been helpful & cheap for reasonable cover. There is a lot of info on them and their service over on Motorhomefacts.com & as stated I think they run their insurance scheme also. I have only ever encountered one fella of theirs on the phone who was a little off hand.

I have just taken out our Cali policy with them, and as I posted in the alarm thread it is worth noting that Comfort's web quote system would not quote me unless I specified that my Cali has a Cat 1 alarm on it (as they all do now).

If you put Manufacturers std fit it tells you to phone for a quote.

I've just renewed with Comfort - £270.

Another one is turned to the darkside!

Welcome.
Comfort-insurance.co.uk are favourite for me (although I guess the acid test is what happens when you need to claim and so far I have not had that displeasure!!)

Looking at insurance for a new Cali arriving in Jan and online Comfort quoted me £243 which I was pleased with. Can anyone confirm the security rating of the California factory fitted alarm (is it Thatcham Cat 2 ?).

Also, does anyone recommend getting a tracker system for the Cali ?

The alarm is cat 1 it also cannot be towed away.

I wondered about a Tracker so I asked an ex-Traffic Police friend. He asked the vehichle recovery unit guys. Their response was that they 'have never failed to recover a vehicle with a tracker fitted'.

If that gives peace of mind then hey, all good!
