Comfort insurance

Trouble with tracker systems the good ones require an ongoing subscription so end up being quite costly.

Re: Another one is turned to the darkside!

I am also insured with Comfort, I think it was £230 for my 180 DSG

So thats a CobraTrak 5 or similar, roughly £800 to fit & aprox £200pa

Would have to get a substantial discount on insurance to make it worthwhile.

Or have it specified as a pre-condition for a policy due to vehicle value/ post code/ theft history. In which case you have no choice.

Yes agreed, but fortunately I've never had to do it.

Should have also added a couple of other reasons for having a tracker- 1.Liking teccy stuff to web track your journeys, or 2.keep an eye on where the wife has gone ;)

Re: Another one is turned to the darkside!

We have been with Comfort insurance since end of October when we bought our 6 month old Cali. A dear old lady drove into us just before Christmas and did some damage to the front of the van. Even though it is not our fault, Comfort have been absolutely brilliant and very efficient with advice and information. Would recommend them and they are really cheap!

Good to hear some positive feedback on what Comfort are like after an event.

Scary but yup! We always took Red Pennant insurance when we tugged to France. The stories about their support after an event were pretty amazing... I think we may rejoin the CC to access that sort of cover for Europe.

I was wondering if anybody could answer a quick query about Comfort insurance. I have been insured with Safeguard last year, but looking round to review things the Comfort quote is a little better. My question surrounds the fact that Comfort don't use a no claims system. The Cali is the only car that I am main driver on the insurance. I have full no claims discount. If I was to go with Comfort for a few years, and then try to move to a different insurance company it sounds like I would not have a no claims discount to take to a new insurer. Comfort seemed to say that it did not really matter, as they could provide evidence of any claims that I had in the period of time I was insured with them and 99% of insurance companies would be satisfied with that. Safeguard (not surprisingly) said that it will cause a problem for me as I will lose my no claims discount by going with Comfort. They (Safeguard) also seemed to imply that I I had a fault claim my premium could be increased significantly by Comfort. Help!

I would imagine that it depends on different insurance companies but in my experience, the new insurer wants evidence that you have not claimed. So you should be able to get a proof of no claims from your current provider in the form of a letter which you can then keep and pass on to a new provider at a later date. I have in the past had a company car an therefore not had my own insurance but when I came to get my own insurance, the insurer has accepted a letter from the company stating that I haven't claimed.

I guess the thing to do would be to pick a few representative insurers and ask them what they would do...

Signed up with them today - didn't need any proof of no claims (we have loads), very good cover including satnav kit, £295.

Cheapest ever insurance we've had on by far the most expensive vehicle we've ever owned!

Thanks to everyone for the helpful recommendations.
After a really helpful chat on the phone with Steve from Comfort the other day, I imagine we'll be going with them too :)

In case anyone finds a few extra points helpful, which I don't think have been covered so far (and I don't think are on Comfort's website)...

The sweet spot on mileage seems to be 8000m. I was quoted ~£300 for 6000m, £320 for 8000m, and £380 for 10000m.
Steve said that most people go for 6000m. Whilst I'm not sure what we'll end covering in our first year, as there's an admin cost in upgrading if you go over your agreed mileage ceiling it makes sense for us to go for 8000 (as we're hoping to do at least 3500m around Europe in the summer :D ).

There's a 25% premium for parking the Cali on the road.
A garage only counts if it's on your property - or it's a "registered motor-home storage facility" (i.e. a rented garage, or even a secure/monitored garage wouldn't count).

Whilst they don't mention it on the website, they do recognise both Tracker Monitor and Tracker Locate as recognised tracker systems, so are entitled to the (mild) 5% discount.

The excess is £200 - or £75 for glass (but windscreen chips are free).

Whilst van contents are covered, valuables should be done on your home policy (standard stuff).

All in all, a pretty great deal.

Steve

I pay under £300 with unlimited miles. Remember if you leave van unattended in Europe for a period of more than 36 hours you have NO cover whatsoever !

Hello, I've only just joined this forum and am looking for some advice. We are all set to take delivery of our ex-demo California next week, but so far nobody will insure us. I've tried various brokers: Comfort, Aplan, Adrian Flux, Motor Direct. It's all converging as they all end up going to the same underwriters anyway. The problem is we require Class 1 Business insurance. We are a small business that makes corporate videos, so will carry expensive video equipment approximately once a week. We wouldn't leave the equipment in the van overnight, and the equipment is separately insured on our business insurance. It's extremely light use compared with most businesses.

Comfort were all set to insure us for this for several hundred pounds, including Class 1 business insurance. I wanted to double check so said 'what about if we were at a service station/ parked on a high street and popped to get a sandwich, would we be covered then?' The broker then checked with her manager and they changed their mind to say we weren't covered. I've had similar stories with the others.

Has anybody else had similar problems? We are now in the situation where we might have to cancel our new vehicle and lose the deposit. It's all incredible disappointing! It makes me wonder if the other people Comfort insures as Business Class 1 are really covered for what they need e.g. if their van was broken into whilst carrying work equipment. We went for a California because it was to replace our Renault Espace which is for similar mixed use. I just can't understand why the California is causing such problems.

Hi mate welcome along. Sorry to hear you are having trouble with insurance don't panic someone will cover you I'm sure try these people they are offering business use

I hope they can help you but don't despair there are many specialist insurance company's out there incl brentacre
Adrian flux. Hic best of luck

Hi Calikev,
Thanks for replying.
Unfortunately I've already spoken to Rob at Advance insurance & Adrian Flux, but their underwriters won't do it either. Haven't tried Brentacre, but they probably use the same underwriters. The combination of the cost of Californias/ our line of work seems to put everybody off (although we are completely un-showbiz they lump us with that side of video), even though we have 5 + years no claims and are the wrong side of 40! Our last hope is speaking to the people who insure our business. The initial response was negative, so they are now going back to their underwriters. I'm hoping that because we already pay them a decent premium to insure our equipment they may take that into consideration, but I'm not holding my breath!

Does your business insurance not cover you if it's stolen from your van? Would it be possible to get a separate insurance
Just for your equipment. Sorry I am a bit dense when it comes to insurance cover. Just a thought.

Just to follow up, phoned Brentacre and they only insure up to value £25k...

Yes, that's the ridiculous thing, the business insurance does cover it. But Comfort Insurance said having expensive equipment is an incentive to break in, apparently, even though we never leave stuff on display, there are blinds, and we're not going to have any logos on it...
I don't see why this is any different from having an unmarked vehicle with any kind of equipment/ tools in.

Probably better off not mentioning it then. Don't insurance company's make you laugh.

Can land you in all sorts of problems such as invalidating insurance leading to being sued by 3rd party if you should be at fault in an accident. Best to disclose everything. I even disclose accidents I've been involved in whilst driving work vehicle. Insurance company's share info nowadays.

If you are a Camping & Caravan Club member you could try their insurance. Also could try VW own insurance & Direct Line.

Has any noticed that ' Comfort ' are into premium creep. Have just received my 2nd renewal, hence third year with them. My status has not changed. Year 1 was £260, Year 2 £290, Year 3 asking £323.......all ex breakdown cover. Your thoughts please Gents ?

All insurance is going up by the looks of things mate. its not to bad still. it has gone up only£63 in three years.
I would be happy with that kev
