Diesel Truma Combi smokes when low water?

Just been reading up about the water/air heating in our 680. We upgraded to a diesel unit, occasionally thick smoke will emit from the exhaust, this seems to be linked to low water? The manuals suggest the heating should run with no water so not sure what’s happening?
Anyone having similar issues?

It is new? I have read about people with molten plastic smell when the heating was getting broken in.

I have the gas system but has operational issues on my part, user error. I contacted them directly, 01283 587900 they talked me through it they are fantastic and really know there products well, that would be my first port of call. secondly youtube.
