Over 8 years old regardless of insurance cover you have to pay 20% of your claim that’s in addition to the excess, it’s scandalous.Agree! We do this now. It's a gamble but even life time cover gets expensive when they get old and it's a hassle to claim re excess etc. We've usually ended up better off. Fingers crossed. X
We lost our cat 2 years ago and have the same feelings over insurance and vets. Considering a new family pet, finances would allow, but would seriously consider self insurance. No longer a dog owner, one of the major reasons was the pure rip off of insurance and vet bills. Playing on your heart strings, to the shear over pricing of their fees and medications.
We do the same. Granted its a gamble when you start but by paying the monthly fees DD into a savings account rather than PP pockets has built up quite a buffer now.Be warned that pet insurance cost increases rapidly as your animal ages. Rather than pay insurers, we now save the premium amount. If any ops are needed, we should have plenty in the pot to cover costs.
I would be interested to know what a Pets at Home vet would have charged.Agree the first and foremost question from the Vet is "is he insured"....... having said that my dog visited a super vet last year for a tooth removal and it was like a wealth management trust reception (coffee was rubbish though)....quoted £3.5 to 5k for a tooth removal on my dog.... was delighted when the final bill was £2.5k and people complain about dentists
Blimey, my dog had 11 teeth out and cost us £750!Agree the first and foremost question from the Vet is "is he insured"....... having said that my dog visited a super vet last year for a tooth removal and it was like a wealth management trust reception (coffee was rubbish though)....quoted £3.5 to 5k for a tooth removal on my dog.... was delighted when the final bill was £2.5k and people complain about dentists

Yep my vet got taken over by a venture capitalist and prices went high and service became worse, a lot of the experienced Vets went overnight and graduates came in, a lot of sickness, missed appointment and nearly losing Ted, and then a debacle with my old dog was the final straw.... I'm now with another company but they have since also been bought out but the owners are still running it for the time being. Its a lucatrive marketBlimey, my dog had 11 teeth out and cost us £750!
