Hello

I am deliberating whether to go to Spain, Portugal to Gibraltar this summer, May - June or driving down to Greece.

Can anyone advise on the Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Macadonia or Albania route? I drove it a couple of times, when It was Yugoslavia.

I was initially going to go down Italy and take the ferry to Corfu but the ferry is quite expensive.

Thank you

As wee now look at the horrors in invaded Ukraine I remember clearly that 20-25 yers ago a self inflicted war in the Balkans and how Serbs, Bosnians and others treated each other. Despite Brits trying to stop them) Since then I will not set my foot on those lands so I do not leave any of my money there. I enjoyed Slovenia a lot though and short stunt in Croatia. You can get to Greece around those countries. Sorry for a geopolitical "plug" but it is and will be increasingly important to differentiate between a friend and foe. Go to Italy.... I am heading to Maranello (Modena) on Friday to check if they have heavy discounts on any Ferraris by (fat) chance. :)

20 -25 years is a generation.

Time to move on methinks.

Wow. Do you see any irony in your own logic here? Seeing how you're from/in Germany?

I do not see how the Balkan peoples could be our foes currently and I’d enjoy a drive through there much more than a motorway run till Puglia …

Worth a watch.

Worth a watch.

Thank you - I will.

I was going to but it is BBC and I don't have a tv licence. We don't watch terrestrial tv. So I can't.

Thanks anyway - perhaps I will have a look around Youtube. There must be something there.

No, I am not a German.
But spending your money there...

which disagrees with your own somewhat crooked logic of not spending money somewhere where generations ago violence/war occurred. I feel no need to make this a discussion though. Just felt like pointing that out.

You are correct in saying that this is not the place for political discussions thus my last response. You are missing a big difference! In Serbia, for instance, it is likely that the same former soldiers who at the age 20-25 killed 3 thousand in Srebrenica (remember that) are now 50 years old and your hosts at the campgrounds, own restaurants you will go to, or check you in to their house with AirB&B. You will not find concentration camps guards while you are on the road in Germany. Their grand children will be renting you bikes. Not the same level of resentment you must admit.

We go to Greece regularly - aiming this summer too - we normally wander down through croatia / motenegro / albania on the way down - slower and scenic

we normally wizz back via macadonia and serbia - not as scenic but roads are fast and we can get back in around 4 days - we always talk about coming up slower through transylvania but end up enjoying Greece so much that we eek out as much time as possible
