Hi all, our 2014 SE has a slight leak from the end cap of the DSG gearbox. VW are quoting £1,300 to take it out and have a look - so any work and parts extra. Does anyone else have experience of this issue, whether that's a reasonable cost (seems an awful lot to me), and the outcome? Thanks in advance!
 
There was a service action about this IIRC. it involved removing the plug and glueing it back in.
 
OK thanks I'll do some research and ask. Would that have been a recall i.e. VW should pay?

Service action if seen at service etc done FOC
Apparently there are no service actions/recalls related to this and the VW Van Centre say the price can't be negotiated and VW won't offer any contribution, in spite of full VW service history. So I've found an independent VW specialist who inspected and can fix for less than 50% of the dealer cost and also replace the mechatronic cover that is corroded. If that goes well the main dealer is one customer down from now on

Has your vehicle got a full VW service history?
 
Yes it has
Then it is a warranty issue 100%

stress this to the dealer , they should have spotted it during inspection / service?
what have you paid them for ?
edit; work shop actions are introduced due to a repetitive incidence of a known problem ! Which the dealer should look out for during the servicing
 
It's a 2014 van but I would have hoped they would treat it as a manufacturing fault or at least offer a significant cost contribution. They did spot it on a service, but wouldn't budge on the £1350 cost to remove and 'inspect' the gearbox. At less than 40K miles it's not a good approach and a great way to lose customers. We have a VW car too so that will go the independent as well from now on.

I really feel for you. We had a problem recently with all the Lacquer peeling off BOTH front and rear bumpers at exactly the same time after 6 years.. And when I say exactly I mean exactly. Went through the VW customer ( don’t care) procedure and finished with a Big NO. They wouldn’t do anything. It’s only that I’m friends with the Bodyshop manager that I got it done for £500. That’s both bumpers taken off stripped and painted. Even if you’ve paid out over the top maintenance prices to get your vehicle serviced at VW they still laugh in your face. I’m never going to take my van into VW again. Also a major service at VW is £380, at my local garage ( with all the correct parts and oil). £170.
 
It’s all well and good for VW to find a fault when your vehicle is being serviced/Inspected but that doesn’t mean they will repair it for free when it’s 4 years out of warranty. Like a number of people on here have said that they have had this problem that the puddle of oil under the vehicle is a bit of a give away and it doesn’t need VW to tell you something isn’t right. What you think is fair treatment is different from what VW think is fair treatment. How long can (Good will) go on? 5 years? 10 years? At some point in a vehicles life it will be unserviceable regardless you took it into the VW dealership or your local garage..Then you either pay to have the work done or just scrap the vehicle. Modern vehicles were never meant to last forever no matter how much money you initially paid.

VW only whilst under warranty, then a decent indy / mechanic.

Yes I certainly expected to pay if it’s not a recall just would have been good to have a conversation about a discount or more info. of final costs. Anyway independent garage from now

Don’t blame you one bit...

Had the repair done today. Replaced two corroded seals - the rest of the gearbox is good. Less than half the cost of the VW price to just ‘investigate’. They couldn’t see why the dealership wanted to remove the gearbox…
