Some time ago I noticed the bottom metal fixings on our bike rack had gone rusty but stupidly didn’t do anything about it for a while so when we bought a new VW bike rack I removed the old Fiamma one to find the clips that hooked under the tailgate had expanded due to rust to the point that they had made indentations in the panel and despite the rubber protectors had also damaged the paint.
You can’t see it in the photos but on each side there is a definite dent in the panel as if it has been squeezed with a mole grip.
A word of caution perhaps for those with old bike racks to check, especially as replacement parts are easily obtained and therefore the damage is avoidable.
