Our experience is if you spray the VW ones with permethrin (we used Lifesystems EX4) nothing goes through them, midges included. We were on Arran last September, it was very warm and very midgey - we had both sliding windows wide open with the treated VW screens in - none inside the van at all. Same treatment to the bellows vents at the top too. Evidence of some expired midges on the mesh (maybe the rest were piled up on the ground outside and we didn't notice).
It's a low toxicity product, so you don't have to worry about birds "twigging it" if they go and consume the expired insects.
Big benefit here is airflow; very dense mesh (midge proof on physical grounds) doesn't let much air through compared with a more open mesh.
