because no matter how hard we try, a square is a square and a rectangle image wont fit with out distorting or cropping
Yes, it will fit if it fills the square in one direction but is smaller than the square in the other direction - see mine!
I don't feel I am complaining, I was trying to confirm the real situation (after noticing something wrong) & trying to help members & forum admins come to the best solutions for all.
The real situation is that everybody who had a non-square avatar (and when I did mine I never saw anything about square) now finds their avatar cropped, so bits are missing.
That may or may not be OK.
I suspect that most people in that situation would prefer shrinking to cropping, but I could be wrong & I absolutely agree you can't please all the people all the time!
I easily changed my avatar from rectangular to square (adding spare blank space, not chopping off "good" image) using Gimp in Ubuntu, but I suspect most members don't have that.
I was very interested to find the "picresize" site on the "Adding picture to profile" page pointed out by Bramco, but I THINK it can only be used to crop an image down to square then resize the whole thing (correct me...).
Incidentally, that page says keep avatars less than 150x150 pixels, where the new site says at least 200 pixels.
So:
I am NOT complaining!
I don't expect everything to work perfectly at first.
I am very pleased with the new site.
I think there is need to clarify the new parameters for avatars.
If anybody with a rectangular image, who would like to display all of it, needs help, then I don't yet see how they would do that, without Gimp.
But I did mine OK, so I am happy.
