I wonder if anyone can help. We are about 2 months into our California ocean experience which is all good at the moment, I am sure we can’t be the only ones who have experienced this but the fridge door/lid keeps popping open, there is nothing in the fridge and in fact except for a test the fridge is turned of at the moment. Before I go back to VW any suggestions.

we are a California ocean 150 DSG 70 plate.

There are a few older threads in which there is mention of the fact that the fridge lid tends to do this when new and it is described as a feature not a mistake ;-) which tends to sort itself out. Not sure how bad it is on yours, but perhaps the first 2 threads below are of use. And then there's also someone with the same problem over at our friends of the T6 forums, who experiences the problem ever since lowering the van.

Hi there,

I reported this problem with my t6.1 at the t6 forum.

The problem appeared since it's lowered, the lid pops open when driving on some bad roads.

I already had a quick look at the clossing mechanism, but i didn't see any 'quick' fix adjustments.

Greetings
Leo aka Racerke600

The other threads refer to the T6 which can have problems with its closing catch. Take it back to the dealer, it's a warranty job. If you break the glass trying to fix it yourself, you will end up with facing a possible expensive bill.

My approach to the fridge :
when not in use I leave it slightly open by placing a tea towel under the lid for hygiene (after cleaning)
when in use after closing the lid I always give a light tap with my fist each side to the front moulding (avoiding the glass top)
This insures closure for me

been doing this for 9 years without incident!

Indeed, but our fridge lid is definitely faulty...

FRIDGEGATE
This is something that VW seem unable to consign to history.
The catch not securing properly was a problem with our T5.1. Unlike Alan, who has followed the "learn to live with it, double light tap route", we followed the warranty route.
What a mistake! Two complete new fridge lids later, the mechanic managed to shear off one of the fixing bolts. Now this is not an easy situation to get over, because the fixing bolt is stainless steel going into the rear aluminium kitchen frame. Very difficult to drill out a s/s bolt in aluminium. This lead to a complete new kitchen unit being fitted. Yes, a complete new kitchen unit. Bed out, wardrobe out, water disconnect, gas disconnect, kitchen unit replaced, all under warranty. No wonder Californias cost so much money when VW are picking up warranty bills like this.
Now with the T6.1, with a different hydraulic strut and fixing catch, they are still popping open!

What was the outcome with this @Jenny H ?
Most bizarrely as is often the case following their inspection of the fridge & agreeing to have the vehicle in for 5 days & providing me with a courtesy van, the fridge has stopped popping open!
Ive still kept the appointment though to see what happens when the fridge is turned on. They said they needed the vehicle so long as to fix the catch requires removing parts/areas with gas connections so they required a gas safe person to help too!

Rohl Dahl writes better " impossible/improbable " stories than these explanations that VW Dealerships make up.

Need for 5 days to change a fridge lid, courtesy car, gas safety person!
Again, No wonder California's are so expensive if VW are picking up warranty bills like this.
And guess who ultimately picks up the tab for this excessive waste of money, yes, us.

Just picked up our new van last week and the fridge lid keeps popping up, did the dealer get it fixed for you and what did they need to do ?

We had ours replaced under warranty, the catch on the lid seems to be of a very slightly different design on the replacement :thumb

I havent have it done yet as it still seems to be staying closed - good to hear that theyve changed the catch though
