i was looking in the manual and it says that when the fridge is not in use a towel should be used, is this a towel used between the base unit and glass top ? Any more insight into how this works would be great, also any general fridge protocol would be good .. thanks

Moisture tends to accumulate in the fridge when in use and also smells etc; if you are a cheese lover. So when empty and switched off it is always best to dry it out and aerate it by leaving the lid open. Obviously that is difficult if you wish to drive it so a small folded towel to stop the lid closing and avoid any rattling does the job perfectly. Keeps it dry and fresh for next use.
