So basically, rectified spirit at 95% ABV briefly filtered through some juniper extract and sold for about four times the price (per unit alcohol) of a bottle of Gordons from Asda. And why would I want to pour myself a G&T using in effect a quarter measure of gin (unless I really like tonic)?

It's not selling itself to me, TBH.
